82 year old nun infiltrates highest security area of Y-12

Anonymously contributed: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 82 year old nun infiltrates highest security area of Y-12 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If this story is true, it will have ramifications across the weapons complex. "Three peace activists -- including an 82-year-old nun -- infiltrated the highest-security area of the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant in a predawn protest Saturday, reportedly evading guards and cutting through three or four fences in order to spray-paint messages, hang banners and pour human blood at the site where warhead parts are manufactured and the nation's stockpile of bomb-grade uranium is stored. It was an unprecedented security breach at the Oak Ridge plant, which enriched the uranium for the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II and continues to be a mainstay of the U.S. nuclear defense program." "Steven Wyatt, a spokesman for the National Nuclear Security Administration at Y-12, declined to discuss details of the early-morning events at the Oak Ridge, but he acknowledged that the unapproved entry into the plant's inner sanctum -- a high-security zone known simply as the Protected Area -- was unprecedented. "There's never been a situation like this before to my knowledge," Wyatt said Saturday afternoon. If unarmed protesters dressed in dark clothing could reach the plant's core during the cover of dark, it raised questions about the plant's security against more menacing intruders." "the plant's inner sanctum -- a high-security zone known simply as the Protected Area"... SNM is kept in the MAA - not the Protected Area.

I would question whether the intruders cut through the PIDAS fence without immediate detection & apprehension.

If so, I would be replacing a whole bunch of security folks.

The reports that I have read had them breaching the PIDAS and actually geting to the exterior wall of the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility. They had enough time to hang a sign on the wall - better that than a couple pounds of C4.

Wackenhut at its best.

If this is factual, “Three peace activists -- including an 82-year-old nun” breaching the PIDAS & making it to the exterior of the MAA, DOE best lock-down this facility.

CAT-I facilities like this are designed to successfully defend against a dedicated team of well armed terrorist.

3 peace activists (including an 82 year old nun) don’t quite meet the design criteria.

Paul of Tarsus escaped a jail in 50 AD in Ceasarea in a similiar fashion. Angelic cloakind device.

Hard to use earthly controls on those well connected with the Holy Spirit. They kinda walk their own path.

But be assured. She was never a threat. An embarrassment perhaps, but not a threat. Wouldn't hurt a fly; maybe talk you to death, pray you into boredom, even whack your knuckles, but nothing more.

Glad that she wasn't injured in the stunt. Her guardian angel probably is used to working overtime with that one.

"But be assured. She was never a threat."

nor the terrorist dressed as a nun.

Big deal! How many of you remember the protester that entered the security gate and walked into 131 and began to throw rolls of computer paper out of the windows? He probably passed 30 employees on the way to the top floor and not a single LLNL employee so much as questioned the fact he was not wearing a badge. Problem was, he looked and smelled like all the other unshaven and unbathed (e.g. Anastasio) A and B-Division folks. So quickly we forget our own "dirty laundry".

Was this the same nun that was arrested a few years ago at Los Alamos?

“they used wire-cutters to gain entry through multiple fences”

“Around 4:30 a.m., Y-12's protective force responded to a sensor on the PIDAS (perimeter intrusion detection and assessment system) that indicated an unauthorized entry into the so-called Protected Area,…”

Why they weren’t immediately interrupted when cutting the exterior PIDAS fence is a stunner. These 3 rather docile folks cut the exterior PIDAS fence, crossed the PIDAS sensor field, cut the interior PIDAS fence & made it to the exterior wall of the MAA. It would appear that security personnel were dead asleep.

"The protesters put themselves at a high risk of losing their life in performing this act.” LOL, what a hoot

Someone has some explaining to do. The company that runs Y-12 security is also the same one that failed in a most public manner a few weeks ago for the London Olympics. The UK brought in professional soldiers to handle the debacle. Time to move the nuclear weapons complex to DoD and have security handled by professional soldiers, not a bunch of wannabes.

How serious is the Y-12 security breach? Could it affect contract competitions?

That would more correctly be the tall building at the southwest corner of the Lab.

Recent comments from the local DoE office sound like the intruders were next to the building for a long time before anyone responded, hanging banners and spray painting graffiti. The good news is that this group was motivated by peace. The next group may have other motives in mind.

Congress should step in and move the weapons complex out from DoE before another event happens.

“Congress should step in and move the weapons complex out from DoE before another event happens.”

They’ll probably provide emergency funding of $100mil to upgrade the NNSA site security systems. Obviously, the old design basis threat (graded security protection plan) didn’t include an 82 yo nun.

The House was proposing that NNSA take over its own oversight and leave DOE HSS out. Guess we have just seen how competent NNSA really is. It's time to put these dysfunctional bureaucrats on the unemployment line.

Good thing this event didn't happen at Los Alamos or it would be in the national headlines and editorial cartoons for months!

As it is, it will be forgotten within a week.

LANL is telling employees to expect problems and lab delays during a bigger than normal protest expected this year on Hiroshima Day (Aug 5-6th) near lab properties.

Sound like a large, angry crowd of protesters is expected this year and they may cause disruptions. Hope they behave.

DoE is too busy fighting off Solyndra to have any time to be concerned with breaches at HEUMF. Come to think of it, DoE does not have time for anything related to the strategic nuclear deterrent.

Wrap-up on another stunning day at Y-12

http://blogs.knoxnews.com/munger/2012/08/wrap-up-on-another-stunning-da.html

“In an extraordinary effort to address more security concerns following Saturday's break-in by protesters at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant, the government's contractor shut down all nuclear operations, placed the working stocks of enriched uranium in secure vaults, and set up a schedule for thousands of Y-12 workers to take refresher courses on security do's and don'ts.”

if not, & elderly nuns sighted in the crowd, use deadly force by all means.

The security at Oak Ridge's Y-12 is so bad, we must instantly reward them with billions in new funding for their new Uranium Processing Facility. Brillant, NNSA!

How much of Livermore's SNM was shipped to Y12? Glad to see it's in better hands.
