What a waste!

Tax dollars gone to waste for the "chili cookoff"

http://www.sandia.gov/LabNews/100730.html

Rumor has it this project didn't amount to anything after 3 years.

A program completely motivated by a knee jerk response to the tv show Breaking Bad. How pathetic

The first sentence in the article sounds stupid:

" Tim Shepodd (8223) liked the moniker and agreed to call it the “chili cookoff.” But there was no chili involved, and the only “cooking” had to do with the kind of chemicals not usually found on Sandia grounds. "

This type of work should be sequestered!

Hey LANL and LLNL hacks, wake up! Did you even read the freaking article? They received DoD funding to do something valuable and useful for the government. Maybe you should learn from example?? That's why we are winning and you are downsizing. We do creative and innovative things to help the tax payer and government--not just leech off of welfare programs like NIF.

Hey SNL - I have heard that your WFO is losing ground and that SNL is now moving people from WFO onto the LEPs. Is that "winning"?

Pretty sad to see the juvenile, unprofessional comments here. Just what you get these days where anonymous blogs give people the means to be as petty and stupid as they want without any societal repercussions. Nyah, nyah, mine is bigger than yours! All you closet assholes will get yours someday, never doubt it. You aren't fooling anyone in your real life, you know.

It's all payback from LLNL for the grief they got from existence and success of Z

All those insults about Cook... are by extension directed you Sandians. Albuquerque is a god-forsaken place anyways. The only civilized place there is the Whole Foods Market.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of juvenile...

Isn't it juvenile of calling this short-lived project a "chili cookoff" and even more juvenile of publicizing it in the press!

It is sad that you have no sense of humor. Or, are you a snob? Lighten up - a bit of repartee among friends never hurt anyone. I'm not sure that the above exchanges actually qualify as 'repartee' but what is really sad is smart people who are successful being unable to enjoy life. One of the reasons we have multiple good laboratories is to challenge each other and hopefully thereby inspire us to greatness ... talking a bit of good-natured smack is not as tragic as you make it out to be. It is common in other walks of life - especially in the military. Please try to enjoy yourself a bit more, because if you can't laugh at life, it will drive you nuts. Good luck.

Not in the present day military. More likely to be found on the sports fields of high schools.

Haha! This project's so ridiculous!

You Sandians are just so silly

Disingenuous. That's not what this is, and you know it. It's a far worse political and scientific back-biting and shadow-dancing agenda that threatens both labs' reputations. Just stop it.

Anonymous said...

Why so serious?

Anonymous said...

I'm casting my vote for this to be sequestered!

Anonymous said...

The only true threats to a lab's reputation lies in the hands of the lab itself. This "Breaking Bad" project already reeks of government waste to begin with. That's not so bad until banter hits a nerve. Now it looks like Sandia is trying to hide something. If they have nothing to hide then they also have nothing to worry about. But now we have a good enough reason to scrutinize that program further.

Anonymous said...

The worst you could screw up on this kind of project doesn't even come close to the laser EoS fiasco. This sounds like capability development and not a bad effort, by the way. And it's not like they would try to fabricate data or measurements particularly since other labs could easily repeat measurements and verify the results. I just hope Sandia keeps pushing capability development without making a stupid mistake like setting up block funding and a "center" where all the dead weight parasites will latch onto. Agile skunkworks at Sandia has always produced very good work in a cost effective manner compared to their big monolith centers.

Sesors developed by Sandia in this project are coming to a drone near you.

Anonymous said...

Threat to a lab's reputation? We are talking about a lab's own actions. If you have something to hide (in the same way LLNL has kept mum on laser EoS for 16 years) then you have invited us in to keep asking the question "what are they hiding?". Unless you are saying that Sandia operates like the Chinese government with all sorts of propaganda machinery to hide its own self- inflicted embarrassments...

This project is such a terrible waste!

Anonymous said...

No, a terrible waste would be the ~$9 billion spent on NIF with nothing to show for it, and no plan for success. That's a terrible waste. This was a useful service performed for the DoD...but I wouldn't expect the hacks from LLNL to get that.

Anonymous said...

This sounds like the kind of pet project pushed by some politician who watches too much cable television. Granted, it's still better than alot of WFO drivel out of the national labs.

Anonymous said...

Oh man..."chili cookoff"...bwahahahah!

Terrible waste is correct!

Anonymous said...

Why in the world would anyone do a study like this?

Anonymous said...

The next step is to do detection for meth cooking byproducts masked with dry cleaning chemicals, and also to search for big containers of chemicals buried underground out in the desert. Also to detect meth inside bins of fried chicken batter. Those are the next logical steps in this work, I assure you.

Soon coming to a drone near you.

Another reason why the DoD is called: The Department of Dumb.

Hey June 8, 2013 at 3:07 AM and June 8, 2013 at 10:56 AM

It's the bitter EOS troll again!

Somebody adopted a stupid name for a DoD project. It must be because those nasty EOS guys lied, cheated, stole, and committed beastiality.

Anonymous said...

EOS troll alert!

Anonymous said...

Haha you Sandians are total losers. You perfect methods for something that isn't even important: EOS. HAHAHA. losers

Anonymous said...

Laser EoS... Hahaha, did you guys ever do an internal review? You guys going to bury the findings? Yeah? Figures. We already know what came out of it.

Anonymous said...

LLNL D2 laser EoS = scientific fraud. Love how 3 data sets from LLNL all sit on top of the wrong curve. What's that called? Oh yeah... It's called Fraud.

Anonymous said...

Bitter EOS troll: "I got a splinter in my finger. It's those damn EOS scientists again."

Anonymous said...

The real waste and high expenses have always been at the top levels of the management and employees at the top.

Some overworked bottom-end working stiff trying to get their project done has never been the problem, or the financial solution, at the labs.

Oddly enough though they always take one for the team.

You've already admitted you have no idea what "EOS" means, so why not shut up and stop being the troll here?

June 11, 2013 at 12:17 PM is one of the LLNL EoS Scientists involved in the D2 fiasco.

No, LLNL has been tossing out that 2.5B+ number around... for the past 3 years! Actually i think their cost estimate is shrinking!

Anonymous said...

"chili cookoff"...how embarassing!

Anonymous said...

The Sandia article says: " Timothy Shepodd (8223) liked the moniker and agreed to call it the “chili cookoff.” But there was no chili involved, and the only “cooking” had to do with the kind of chemicals not usually found on Sandia grounds. "

Anonymous said...

The chili refers to a detail in an early season episode of Breaking Bad where the guy would add chili as part of his meth recipe.

Anonymous said...

Some people are purposefully ignorant about these types of references. Not a bad thing though, televisions is a royal waste of time.

June 11, 2013 at 9:18 PM

No, I'm just sick & tired of EVERY thread being turned to EOS. I get it: the Bitter EOS Troll has some axe to grind...probably got asked to get out of Ed Moses' chair or something. How about NOT grinding it once in a while?

Anonymous said...

I gotta admit its better than jdog's anti union rant.

Anonymous said...

D2 laser EoS is a high-water mark of fraud and a measure of how not to run a government research program - that mark by which all other programs can be measured against. This is in fact what is being done. Not to change to subject, but merely to make the point that the chili cookoff is a choir boy compared to laser EoS.

Anonymous said...

Bitter EOS troll: I have a hangnail that is so painful it reminds me of the EOS issue.

Give it up already!

Anonymous said...

The completely ignorant and blindly loyal pro-EOS jerk is as annoying as the EOS troll; actually they are both trolls. This blog would be better off banning the EOS subject.

Anonymous said...

The EoS topic will never die because we all are waiting to see how it ends and we know LLNL will never bring closure but rather keep adding more uncertainty to the pile. Lab management would love to have this topic banned. It has caused all sorts of turmoil form them when they finally came around to the realization the the EoS emperor has no clothes after 16 years. And they can't admit that their work has problems because it puts more pressure in NIF funding. The only logical course of action is for NNSA to force Sandia and LANL to help the lab with laser EoS experimental design. Or they can just do the whole thing also. But I'm not holding my breath.

Anonymous said...

Bitter EOS troll: I had a hangnail 16 YEARS AGO and it reminds me of those evil EOS scientists.

Geez. Get a life.

Anonymous said...

Here is a better analogy: "The AVLIS program ended in a cloud of questionable circumstances, and that reminds me of laser EoS."

Anonymous said...

Anyone following the Heather Wilson political payola scandal that broke this week?

It stinks to high heaven!

Anonymous said...

Well hot dog! Golly gee that reminds me of those persnickety EoS scientists!
