Has the "high foot" campaign saved NIF?

Has the "high foot" campaign saved NIF? Is the strategy of defining success to be be two orders of magnitude lower that the original predicted yield impressed the NNSA? Are people at NIF happy that only one person, Omar Hurricane, gets credit? Will funding continue indefinitely for the high foot tuning campaign? Will anyone admit that the high foot approach will never ignite?

"I admit, it cannot ever ignite.

That in and unto itself would be work a Nobel prize or two. Think about it.

The big foot campaign is all a hoax.

Ed Moses, damn his evil soul to everlasting torment, made it all up so he could claim victory and salvage his shredded reputation.

Yep, Ed got together with big foot, and staged the whole thing.

Is NIF still alive? LLNL is happy they lost the "lime-light" while LANL was busy shutting WIPP down!

When pressed, most NIF technical staff will admit that the "high foot" campaign will not lead to ignition. The deception is that NIF management and some technical staff imply that what they are learned from this campaign will get them to ignition by merely using a different target. Balderdash. And, your question about continued high NIF funding: I hope not but I fear so. As the high foot campaign loses its luster, the current plan is to begin experiments at NIF using plutonium 242 and/or 244 in place of 239 and oversell that, too.

"High foot" campaign? Is that Bret Knapp kicking staff in the ass with a "high foot"? Man you guys at Livermore are so innovative, except in science!

I don't see how NIF can get accurate Pu EOS. The diamond ablator doesn't work and can't be modeled. Most of the data contained multiple shocks and the analysis was suspect. The Ta phase transition was a major embarrassment. Meanwhile, the Z machine gets accurate data at a much lower cost.

I guess they can do the RT strength "measurements" which aren't even measurement because they rely on a hydro code to infer the results.

Good job NNSA. Keep funding this garbage physics.

NNSA can't help but fund it. The alternative is to shut the place down, and they won't do that at least for another political generation, if ever. Too many careers would end if NNSA admitted to having allowed itself to be misled into sinking many billions into a useless facility. Heads would roll, and roll, and roll.

The green sludge oozing out of barrels at WIPP is more likely to produce fusion ignition than NIF.

Paraphrasing Johnny Cochrain, "If it does not ignite, you must say goodnight."

The high foot is a sham and a lie. Basically, Hurricane wants people to get the impression that the design offers a path to ignition when, in reality, they would need 5-10 times more energy to ignite. They're buying time with football shaped holoraums and diamond ablators. They allow people in the press to come to the conclusion that these tweaks intended to improve performance are a "solution" to getting ignition. I'm certain they still don't understand why the original NIC design broke up.

Anonymous said...

They don't even know that it broke up. That notion itself is a hypothesis rooted only in simuations, and of course they should not trust the simulations but they do anyway. Scientific skepticism went out the window long ago, and was replaced by religion.

Anonymous said...

Everything is rooted in simulations and the opinion of experts. They call that QMU.

"High foot" Campaign? Another acronym for another NIF failure.

When my daughter is premenstrual and deliberately looking to cause others discomfort to match hers, she plants intentional seeds of discord, creating drama, that in her state causes Drama. Thus she is for an instant, a Drama Queen.

The original poster of this thread is a kindred spirit. A Drama Queen. Perhaps a Midol or .PMS rectal suppository will calm your nerves and bring peace to other readers...

Very little drama in this thread before July 11 at 4:03 pm. Before 4;03 pm, a well-informed and interesting discussion. At 4:03 pm, a sudden interpolation into the discussion of the words "female" and "drama." These are offered as synonymous and as a not so subtle slur. How boringly sexist. Ho-hum. I suspect the quality of the discussion is the motive for the "drama queen" post. Can we get back to NIF, its costs, its likelihood of ignition, and the implications of its "high foot" campaign. These things matter to LLNL employees and to the conduct science (not boring at all).

"High foot"? Seems to be a very appropriate name for all the leaders NIF has gone through. Next?

High foot smoke and mirrors buys them a couple of tears to figure out what the next deception/con will be.

You gotta pity the fools who works in the field of equation of state. To think how little you contributed to science because your laser EoS experiments are all rubbish and your data analysis is borderline or even overt fraud. Must suck when you are on your deathbed thinking how much of a parasite you were on society.

A bitter pill that you need to swallow.

acerbic words hurt when there is truth underlying them. these are words you need to hear. One needs to eventually remove their blinders.

Prediction - Mark My Words: WIPP will never take another barrel of nuke waste & NIF and its expensive successors will never produce a single Watt of power.

Tell you what. I'll bet you $100 you're wrong.

Drop by when "never" is past to collect.
