Bechtel-Affiliated Projects Recognized for Highest Levels of Safety Excellence
RESTON, Va., March 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel-affiliated teams at the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant project in Kentucky and Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico were recently recognized for excellence in safety with Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Status—the highest honor for worksite-based safety and health systems.
Bechtel and LANS have no dignity for accepting this award after shutting down our Nation's only transuranic waste site, WIPP.

The most deserving "Undeserving Sham Award" of the century.
"VPP Star recognition would not have been possible without a strong commitment of LANL employees to meet the highest standards for workplace safety, and to incorporate a safety culture in everything they do," said Acting Laboratory Deputy Director Paul Henry.
Paul Henry must be from Becthel. He awarded this to himself, patting himself on his back, repeatedly, telling himself, WIPP doest not exist, WIPP does not exist....
If LANS exceeds the "highest level of safety standards" with this VPP Status Award, I'd hate to see the "lowest level of safety standards".
"Star status is reserved for contractors who have and continue to implement excellent safety programs that systemically protect employees."
I wonder how the WIPP employees who had a radioactive dose uptake from the LANL exploding drum feel about how LANS protected them with their excellent safety program?
As to how in the hell LANS can accept this award following the WIPP debacle is beyond human comprehension.
Guess the recent exposures at TA-55 that were reported by the DNFSB are just part of safety excellence.

Hey jerk, you can make fun of Charlie all you want but you have to admit by the standards of all other LANL and LLNL employees he not only is winning it he already "won" it. Millions and Millions of "won". In the modern world it is all about the Benjamins and Charlie just schooled you fool.
One lucky, or stupid, fool who makes money from other fools in life, in one of the fools' paradises like LLNS/LANS does not indicate superior knowledge, ability, or experience. Just being the right fool for the right fool's job, at the right time. If that's your definition of success in life, go for it, but I doubt you are fool enough to succeed in that way. Or if you are, please say so.
The problem of awarding LANS this VPP Status Award is that the award no longer has any significance or prestige that it once had. We will only yawn when it is awarding to companies that truly have earned the award in the future. Did LANS potentially buy this award? It wouldn't be beyond them since they are trying to recover from the WIPP incident. By the way, did LANS pay the NM State the $52M they owe them or are they still "stalling". So much for LANS positive impact on NM communities, they don't even pay fines levied on them by the NM state.
How can any site that caused a Type A safety investigation win this award? Something is very wrong when LANL can have a debacle as large as the LANSCE radiation contamination event and even be under consideration for a safety award.

C'mon people, everyone knows that VPP is all about process, not product. The safety process at LANL is what won the Star award, not the results. LANL has an outstanding safety process, lots of training, lots of MOVs, lots of worker involvement, lots of safety committees, etc., etc.
The results of this award winning process is demonstrably truly abysmal. Obviously, science and engineering (which value results) have lost out to bureaucracy (which values only process) at the LANSLLNS facilities in safety as well as everything else.
7:42 nailed it. He'll never be a "successful" LANS manager; he speaks the truth and sees the emperor has no clothes.

Sounds like sour grapes. There are skills at playing the game and some players are the best at what they do. You sound pathetic when you put down the success of others.

My personal success was established long before I retired. What I find "pathetic" is admiration for unearned success.

Success is measured by results. In our world results is how much money you make. We all agree on this even you. Charlie and a number of other LANS/LLNS people have had great success. You can admire them or ignore them but you have no right to say they did not earn it.

Of course I do. (See the First Amendment to the Constitution.) If you think success is money, then you obviously think Charlie has "earned" the obscene salary and other perks he gets. No one on this blog agrees with you.
"...You can admire them or ignore them but you have no right to say they did not earn it..."
Define "earn it" please, not to include received X dollar compensation for period Y.

Money is the most objective way to measure success. I am not saying it is always earned but any other measure is problematic or subject.
One person may say happiness is a measure of success, making art, giving back, and so on, however these are not quantifiable and are simply individual definitions. We all agree on the value of a dollar, it is worth a dollar. By this standard there are many successful people at the labs. They legally obtained the money so it is in fact earned. You can deny that it was earned but you just look like a fool. Now could you please tell us how the money was not earned?
March 8, 2015 at 10:26 AM
"Legally obtained" = "earned"?? How about if I win the lottery? If someone gives me $1000 just because I'm a nice guy, did I earn it? How about if I'm not a nice guy, and he's just generous? How about if I'm paid an enormous sum in advance to do whatever the guy tells me, and to make sure he doesn't get blamed for any negative consequences? Are we getting closer to Charlie?

Labbies, even the top managers, earn a pittance compared to reasonably industrious individuals on the street or in the valley. By your standards, they must be dismal failures.
""Legally obtained" = "earned"?? How about if I win the lottery?"
Perhaps you worked hard to get the money to buy lottery tickets. You took a chance while others where timid. I would say yes you earned it. Just like somebody getting rich in Vegas.
"If someone gives me $1000 just because I'm a nice guy, did I earn it?"
You had to convince someone you where a nice person. This takes work, so yes you earned it.
" How about if I'm not a nice guy, and he's just generous? "
Heaven helps those that help themselves.
"How about if I'm paid an enormous sum in advance to do whatever the guy tells me, and to make sure he doesn't get blamed for any negative consequences?"
This person must trust that you have better skills than others to make sure he does not get blamed. In the real world such people are called lawyers and yes the better lawyer you are the more you earn you money.
"Are we getting closer to Charlie?"
Sounds like you made the case that Charlie earned it.

WTF!? Sorry but you are the one that sounds sick and anti-American. American is about freedom and the pursuit of happiness. It is not about you enforcing upon others what you personally feel is is worthwhile. You are free to pursue what makes you happy but you have no right to prevent hard working, ambitious Americans from pursing their dreams and earning success. You are a sad, sick, pathetic, Anti-American, scumbag who is bitter about other peoples success.
So it has come to this? Sad.
