Is weapons science leaving LANL?

Is weapons science leaving LANL and going to LLNL? Follow the money.

No. That convenient fiction has existed since Livermore was founded. Follow the stockpile.

Word is LLNL has the “new” stockpile and LANL maintains the “old” stockpile.

10:10 am is absolutely right. It’s a total fiction that LLNL has always lead in weapons science. Furthermore, Edward Teller, Seymour Sack, Harold Brown, and Johnny Foster are all fictitious characters.

Once again, LLNL has always claimed to have a monopoly on so-called “new” ideas. The problem is that 9 out of 10 of their “new” ideas are stupid. The other one they stole from LANL. So much for word on the street.

There is no "new stockpile." What garbage. LLNL at this late date can't design itself out of a paper bag.

LLNL has been leading the NW work since 2000. LANL has been leading the scandals and is only open due to political reasons. Sure they may have some future for pits but there has been no real new work there since the lab imploded with Wen Ho Lee. So yes the NW has been moving to LLNL for some time and will continue to do so. There is is not much science going on at LANL either since pits don't need that much. LLNL will be the de-facto NW lab, Sandia is a national security lab and LANL will be Savanah River West, or Rocky Flats II.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Your knowledge of LANL and its programs and NW work is at least 12 years old. Go pet your dog or your grandkids, you don't count anymore.

I recommend you look to the real customers in the DOD and whose new weapons development they are budgeting for future funds before you dismiss the possibly. Don’t rest on LANL past successes.

Replying to the wrong post?

Yes. Point follows. The money is going to LLNL weapons.

"Yes. Point follows. The money is going to LLNL weapons."

This will increase, however LANL will be getting pit money, I would guess a few of the LANL systems will be moving to LLNL as well within 5-10 years.

Not so distant future state.

LANL = production facility
LLNL = the NNSA weapons science facility
SNL = the NNSA weapons engineering facility

Why would anyone want to live in New Mexico anyways. It’s not a secret lab anymore.

Los Alamos: Great schools, zero crime, great weather, good outdoor environment, high professional salaries, great pension and benefits, good health care locally, great downhill and cross-country skiing, fabulous farmers market in summer, etc., etc., etc. Plus, the most rich multi-discipline theoretical and experimental scientific institution in the world.

Oh yes. The evidence suggests they are beating down the doors to get to LANL. Wait, they aren’t? Los alamos a great place? Evidence suggests you are out of touch. People want to live near LLNL or LANL, I don’t think this even needs to be proven but why don’t we look at the evidence on who has attracted better talent over the past 10, Nay 20 years. Same contract terms and conditions so don’t bother bringing up for profit.

The problem is that there are many other places that offe these things as well. The salary of a Professor at Research University is on par or even better than a LLNL or LANL scientists. At some point LANL offered much better science opportunities than most universities, however this is no longer the case. Over the past 15 years you have people leaving for places like U of Nebraska, U of Tennessee, Northern Arizona, and Utah and saying overall it is better than the NNSA labs for a variety of reasons. I won't even mention the number of people who have left for the high tech industry. The NNSA labs have increasingly becoming places that the best people simply will not find appealing compared to the options.

Boulder, Tucson, Eugene, Corvalis, Fort Colins, Moscow, Flagstaff, Golden, Bozmen, Fargo, Laramie, Merced, Santa Cruz, Riverside, Pulman, Bellevue, Redman, Vancuver, Burnaby, Calgary, Seattle, Missoula, Logan, Salt Lake City, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obisbo, San Jose, Palo Alto, Berkley, Livermore, Irvine, Los Angles, Westwood, Phoenix, Reno, Boise, Tacoma, Portland, Denver, Albuquerque, Los Cruses, Socorro, Fairbanks

These are all places that people from LAML have left for in the last 5 years that meet all tour criteria.

We good now?

Don’t forget about San Diego, Oak Ridge, and my personal favorite Washington DC.

LAML? I am afraid that your point is now invalid. 5.39 PM is therefore correct. Now technically the places you have mentioned do meet the criteria that one posters gave and it is also correct that LANL people have been leaving for these locations along with many others. I would also add that I know of people who left for places like Austin Texas which does have many good things but probably falls short on the nature bit. How about Oak Ridge, Brookhaven, Argonne, Chicago and so on, well the weather is not that great but they also have some nice things. The point is that LANL has some pretty stiff competition for talent and this has been getting worse. LANL has also experienced a number periods of uncertainty and having NNSA and people like Nanos openly attacking the workforce at times has not helped. There is no guarantee that something like will not happen again. In fact with all the things that LANL does there is bound to be problems.

So how much are full-day lift tickets in Missoula?

I don't know about Missoula but I know a some people that left for Bozeman for better pay. LANL and LLNL are simply no longer competitive with even 3rd rate places. No disrespect to MSU but come on. The NNSA labs are becoming a joke in terms of real science and engineering.

I hate to tell you this, but they always have been. The longstanding saying in academia is "Don't worry, if you don't get tenure, you can always get a job in a National lab."

Yeah, the downside being, you might actually have to do work and achieve results instead of teaching a bunch of privileged, bored, rich students.
