I find it kind of funny that in 1999 most people assumed the need for nuclear weapons was over and that we should close the labs or least one of of the labs. Also we should let a sleazy for profit people run them or that total nut like Nanos should be made director. Anyone who was at the labs from 1999 to 2015 saw that decay, loss of talent, and demoralization. LANL for example
took constant beatings in the press, constant attacks from politicians, calls to shut it down, people saying what is done in Los Alamos
that could not be done anywhere and so on.
At the same time there where plenty of people who said that Russia and China where long term threats. Anyone who said Russia would be an issue was simply laughed at. Also people pointed out that the constant long term beatings of the labs and privatization of the labs
might be noticed by our enemies.
Well here we are. Let us hope that after 20 years of decay that Russia knows that the US has a credible deterrent.

You can avoid the draft, but you can't avoid the radioactive fallout, and the absence of power, food, medical care, potable water, police protection, and all the rest of civil society that will collapse if nuclear war occurs.
So we should be ok with any nation that has nuclear weapons doing whatever it wants by threatening their use? Nonsense. Putin is throwing out over 70 years of stability based on mutual understanding of the undesirability of any nuclear exchange. He must be challenged to the point where the more sane heads in Russia take him out. It will happen.

Do try to keep up. Putin has had his FSB busily taking out any threatening sane heads for weeks.
The Generals will take care of it, and they can protect themselves. It will take longer for them to give up their loyalty than the political allies of Putin, but their loyalty to the country and its people is much stronger.

Possible but I also heard there is a bunch of hard core Generals who all all for massive war and in fact Putin did invaded Ukraine to try and placate these guys.

Things are very dark right now. With Russia losing so badly they may use a nuke. Italy just elected a fascist leader, Trump may have given secrets to Russia. Crime is through the roof and America is deeply divided with 1/3 of the population wanting to destroy democracy. I feel very sad and upset. No wonder the stock market is declining people feel the US is broken and in many ways the world is broken. China is now starting be threat. It is amazing how much damage one man like Trump can do, kill millions in a pandemic, tank the economy, aid our enemy, try to overthrow the nation, and create 60 millions fascists. How did this happen?

I feel your pain, but I also think that the reason you "feel very sad and upset" is that 90% of what you believe isn't true. I'd suggest broadening your news sources to include a few that you think you don't agree with. Start slow so you don't get more "sad and upset," but stick with it - your perspective and understanding of what is really going on in the world will be less burdened.
I thought our military thrived on chaos, they are very proud of how upsetting that is, for the enemy, it is after all, maybe WWIII as some people have posited. Maybe chaos on the home front, is a wonderful thing. So enjoy.
Not to worry, we have Admiral Rachel Levine to protect us.
