CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico's two U.S. senators are welcoming more than $54 million in penalties being levied against the U.S. Department of Energy for numerous violations that resulted in the indefinite closure of the nation's only underground nuclear waste repository.
The state Environment Department on Saturday announced it was imposing the penalties for 30 state-permit violations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in southeastern New Mexico and at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Sen. Martin Heinrich issued a statement over the weekend saying the state's action is warranted. He also said the fines shouldn't jeopardize completion of the environmental cleanup at Los Alamos and at the repository in Carlsbad.
Similarly, fellow Democratic Sen. Tom Udall said the state's action shows why state environmental authority is needed over WIPP waste operations.

Anyone want to take bets on the date that McMillan's resignation letter will be released to the public?
December the 23rd looks about right, say around 3pm in the afternoon?
McMillan was the least qualified person in history of Los Alamos to become Director. Even Nanos, who was a disaster in the position, was significantly more qualified.
February. Anastasio has supported McMillan and Pattiz adores Anastasio. That's kept Charlie alive despite so many problems. But now Charlie has to go. Lack of a viable successor is a problem.
There is NO current viable internal candidate, so LANS will be stuck having to reap from fallow fields.
That is exactly why it is taking so long to dump Charlie. Who else is there?
Terry !!!
He's being waiting patiently in the wings for so long. Poor boy, It would be a terrible disappointment to him if he wasn't at least made Director-for-a-Day.
It will be Terry, there is no choice. I can see the nick-name now
"The Reign of Terry" and it will be, oh it will be.

Sorry, but that is BS. Nanos had no qualification compared to McMillan. Nanos was a pure malignant psychopath.

And his mommy too, who has been grooming Terry for Lab Director since he was born!
I wish they would toss Charlie before the Holidays. This would give me something else to celebrate during the Holidays. The end of the "Livermore reign of terror at LANL".
3:43 AM nails it. Terry has no significant accomplishments on his own, but has rode his mother's political position well beyond where he could have gone without her assistance.
You do know that Jeannette Wallace has been dead for almost 4 years?
If not Terry, then the most likely PAD to assume the temporary position of LANL Director would be the PAD who overseas S&T.
That would be: Alan Bishop.
Unlikely that Anastasio would return, but maybe one of the former PAD could come back and bridge to a new M&O contract. For example: Mara, Mallory or Rees.

Rees will never return. Mike and Carol Burns ran him off because Rees saw right through Mike's lack of competence and credentials. You don't f**k with the Burn's, they own Los Alamos.

It is true that Rees will never ever return but not for the reasons you are stating. Rees was not run off, I heard he was escorted off.
LLNL had Tomás Díaz de la Rubia and LANL has Mike Burns.
It is hard for females to work under such men.
