When the Air Force had a nuclear security lapse, Gates fired the Secretary AF. Nun-gate is a NNSA security lapse, so why would Chu be fired? Seems more likely to see a new head of NNSA.
The problem with the current situation, Congress wants to be a "little bit" pregnant. Either NNSA needs to be reintegrated full into DOE or completely separate.
For my money, I'd like to see LLNL pulled out of NNSA and put back into the DOE office of science. LLNL's guard force is about to be cut in half now that SNM has been removed. Continuing to treat LLNL like a mini Pantex, LANL, or Y-12 makes no sense. LLNL just doesn't look like the other NNSA sites.
Just about every group that has looked at how the nuclear weapons enterprise is presently organized agrees the system is broken, but making NNSA independent would not be helpful. Moving it to DoD with the rest of the country's weapons enterprises is not perfect, but how many more debacles must happen before this logical end is reached?
While Chu is not my idea of a great Secretary of Energy, I do think that calling for his ouster is not warranted. This mess is NNSA's matter and the chopping block should stop there.
As to LLNL's guard force being whittled down, what happens if SNM is imported from LANL, which is one of the items on the table with CMRR being scrapped.
It is a little funny looking that this is not the final straw before a complete housecleaning of NNSA. Makes you wonder if another plan is in the works and it will soon be uncovered.
Don't expect anything out of Congress or the O'bama administration.
Both have put their personal interests over the interests of the country.
Leaders, by their actions, show that the USA does not matter.
Why should the security people at y-12 care more about their performance than does our weak, disinterested, self-serving president and congress?
The USA is really hindered by its weak government.
A 10% federal government pay cut is in order. To recognize performance accordingly.
My, my how times have changed. Bodman fired Brooks over security lapses, but Chu keeps D'Agostino. Looks as if security just doesn't matter much to the current crowd.
Chu would need to take an interest in the weapons complex, something he doesn't have.
If Congress took it from him, either by transferring NNSA to a new agency or by firing him, he would be equally happy.
Him keeping the worthless D"Agostino - the futile architect of the privitization of the labs - allows Chu to ignore the labs. It he is asked to engage much, he will resign. No interest.
Kinda like my interest in Rachel Maddow. If most women were more like her, I'd turn in my masculinity and settle for a gay relationship....No interest
Be patient. Look how long it took to find someone to do the job the last time around. D"Agostino wasn't the first choice. Or the second. Or...
What's the point of rushing into a bad choice when there is no urgency? After all, it was just a 82 year old nun. Not like it is indicative of systemic failures in the culture or anything serious.
Chu and Obama (actually Peter Orszag when he headed OMB) wanted to replace D'Agostino (a Bush appointee) but couldn't find a good replacement candidate. Basically no one wanted this dead end and pain in the rear job. So it was decided to keep him.
Btw, Rachel is better and more interesting than any of the right-wing FNC hacks.

Rachel Madcow?? Nah.
Btw, Rachel is better and more interesting than any of the right-wing FNC hacks...
If women were more like Rachel more men would prefer sheep...
What man in his right mind would tolerate this raging, opinionated cow?
If she wasn't useless, she'd act on her beliefs and actually do something rather than just gab, gab , gab. The most annoying trait of womenhood (and yes, of raging conservative hacks who have adopted the classic women's tactic of annoying people into action by incessant insistance)
Just sayin..
