Lockheed Martin Corp, which has held the contract since the 1993 through its wholly owned subsidiary Sandia Corporation, announced in an emailed statement and press release Monday that the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (frequently called New Mexico Tech) and New Mexico State University had both joined a bid to manage the lab, along with Purdue University.

A Falwell, Cogswell or Trumpf class college managing national weapons science.
I wonder what it will be like to be in the room when that team certifies the stockpile?
Distracted fools like HClint, Trumpf and Bush Jr, would nod, OK, along with the current White House resident.
A thinker would respond, "Test."
Forget weapons science, that lost all respect by 1990. You aren't going to get a modern Oppenheimer or Teller going into vacuum tube or radar research today. Instead, those people go into artificial intelligence or maybe some other hot science topic. They aren't studying hard to dedicate their lives to improving buggy whips.
That said, the labs used to attract top people to work on non-weapons R&D. But funding and management have gotten so bad that the only people left their are either the old fogies who still have pensions or UNM, NMSU, NM Tech or BYU students stuck in New Mexico for family or lack or career options reasons.
