Los Alamos spends LANL NMGRT on new swimming pool, improved ice rink and improved golf course. Demonstrating once more that Los Alamos is all about operating the Lab for local money, not for national service. The Los Alamos County Council Tuesday approved the use of up to $6.5 million in capital improvement funds to build a multi-generational pool that will be attached to the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center. AND $4.5 million in improvements for the golf course and $1.2 million for improvements to the ice rink.

Looming large over the pool discussion was the future of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The lab’s management and operations contract is scheduled to go to a new contractor next year. If the lab’s contract goes to a non-profit contractor, the county, and the state, would lose millions of dollars in proceeds from the gross receipts tax. New Mexico does not apply a GRT tax to non-profits.

What a complete waste of money. Tell how has the for profit model improved anything at LANL? I cannot even see that it has actually been of value of to the town, most of these things are unnecessary and way overpriced. Please NNSA put a stop to this, LANL serves the nation not just Northern New Mexico.
The for profit model has always been the Frankenstein of politicians and Livermore carpet baggers. It is time the American public got a square deal. Sure, Los Alamos country residents will finally have to pay for ice rinks, pools, golf courses and environmental centers themselves. So what?
Cut all salary by 30% if you want to save the taxpayer money. Six figure salaries are the norm for most mid career folks at LANL no matter what they do. This is WAY above the national average and WAY above the regional and state average. This is the true honey pot. Out of the money flowing through LANL goes to Salaries, not "profit".
As usual, the anti-LANL guy doesn't have any idea what he is talking about. Most of the staff at LANL could make a few phone calls and get a higher paying job at other venues. Most still believe in the mission, like the local area, the good schools, and their world class colleagues. They stay at an undervalued and top heavy institution for those reasons.
Every improvement made to the Los Alamos community helps to attract and keep the personnel critical to serving the nation and the critical mission.
