New head of NNSA has BS

New head of NNSA has BS degree from UNM.....how far things have fallen, how far from the times when highly qualified scientists could be found in charge of the enterprise.

He is only acting but he does seems pretty thin.

If I read his biography, I see a very experienced person who will probably bring a lot of knowledge and personal understanding to this important high-level job. You see a guy who doesn't have a Ph.D., harrumph. That sort of attitude might be why a non-Ph.D. is a much better candidate for this sort of policy making position. Incidentally, at last count only 19 Representatives, and 0 Senators, have Ph.D.s Neither does the President, in fact only one President in U.S. history (Wilson) has had a Ph.D.

I really doubt this, NNSA is not exactly a policy job it is a technical job. Look at this way, the last few NNSA heads did not have Ph.Ds and they have been utterly mediocre, I suspect that this has to do with the total lack of technical understating. It is possible for someone to be a good leader who knows how to pick people under him/her with the the technical expertise. Lets face it NNSA and the NNSA lab system has been falling apart for some time now so it really does not matter who heads it. Why do we even have NNSA?

As 6:23 PM noted, he is only acting until Gordon-Hagerty, nominated by Trump on Dec 11, is confirmed by the Senate.

She also serves as president of LEG Inc., providing strategic advice and counsel in domestic and national security issues. Ms. Gordon-Hagerty was previously executive vice president and chief operating officer of USEC, Inc. She was a member of the White House National Security Council staff for more than five years, serving as the Director for Combating Terrorism. Ms. Gordon-Hagerty previously served as the U.S. Department of Energy’s Director of the Office of Emergency Response, and as Acting Director of the Office of Nuclear Weapons Surety. Before that, she was a professional staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Energy and Commerce. Why do we even have NNSA?

Because ERDA and DOE were much, much worse. Top guy doesn't need a Ph.D; his top advisors and deputies do.

"Because ERDA and DOE were much, much worse."

I never bought into this. You have the DOE with its problems and than you add an extra layer of NNSA with its problems so you just end with way more problems. The NNSA is just added on bureaucracy with no added value or worse negative value.
We did not have an NNSA for 55-60 years and things ran well, we have an NNSA and things are falling apart.

>Top guy doesn't need a Ph.D; his top advisors and deputies do.

I agree the question is does he/her actually have top advisors or will he/her listen.

If history is any guide, he won’t listen. His resume is that of a born bureaucrat.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
