How accurate is this number ?
What's the source of the number ?
If final number near 190, will George pull the trigger for ISP ?

I don't know how accurate but it is from a good source. Even if is off, it could not be by more than 10-20. Yes, ISP will be considered. The 3161 plan is not over.
Remember that this is not the official LLNS site and we publish what we hear when we mingle with a variety of people.

If they knew they needed to can 750 people to balance the books and only 190-210 people took the VSSOP you can plan on an ISP. My guess is that George has to make the 750 this year by June, or the $69M that he's already in the hole for in FY09 will trigger even more people to go. If I were you I'd be planning on a RIF every year from now on until the budgets are higher and LLNL has a known mission. As it stands now, I don't see anything new coming in the door. It's the SOSDD with no light at the end of the tunnel.

I wonder what the new attrition rate is these days. Even without ISP we may make the 750..given time.

How many EBA's are there lab wide? A change in the EBA policy to limit the amount of time people can be EBA before termination would like close a lot of the current gap.

They don't have time. They have a fixed pot of money for one year and they're in the red.More people must go now and an ISP is the only way to accomplish this.

As far as attrition goes, you're going to find at least 49% of the old people will now have to stay at LLNL until 62 years old for social security to kick in.

The economy and loss of UCRP at their age leaves them no choice. For all the new hires, well, a long service life with expensive mediacl cost is what they've to look forward too. Those people will be working well into their 70's just as my grandparents did. What a shame. Isn't progress a wonderful thing?

The carrot of a wonderful life at retirement based on a thriving economy is being dangled once again in the name of a 401k. Do you really believe it? Will they jerk that and SS from you too when it comes time to collect?

A well place rumor from the 5th floor of 111 is the GM wants a major reorg of the whole lab - closing major support departments and outsourcing offsite non-mission functions. Look for LLNL to resemble a "Think-Tank" in the future - In house capability will be a thing of the past, only few hands on "wet" labs, most of the lab's mission will be carried out by sitting in basic looking offices and in meeting rooms... can you say RAND Corporation North... George wants 10% of the LLNS workforce gone by Sept, so we're still short 500+ unless drastic measures are taken... The new LLNS motto for LLNL should be "Dead Man Walking"

Many more of us would have signed up for this VSSOP if we would have been told by our senior management if we were eligible for unemployment benefits while we were looking for employment on the outside. Our management should have met with Ca. EDD to discuss this VSSOP and got a ruling, then pass this information on to us.

"Dead Man Walking" is so appropriate!

Stay at there and they will either kill your career or kill you. Stress, poorly maintained equipment, toxic waste they won't clean up anymore, someone going postal....

No job is worth this cost, no job.

I would have taken the VSSOP if I had not been excluded. Apparently, I\'m too important for the VSSOP, but not important enough for a salary at the same level as those who aren\'t. I\'ll be leaving soon anyway, as are many of the lab employees competent enough to get offers elsewhere.

To me this spells ISP's a comin! It looks as if some people that post here were correct but while we're at it let's confirm a new rumor that I heard today even though I do not believe it. The rumor is, 750 + signed up for VSSOP at the last minute. Any of you 111 people or LLNS ULM going to confirm that or just be your normal secretive selves?

750 + signed up for VSSOP at the last minute? Sure, and the dollar is rebounding. And, We have no inflation or recession. And, It is a great time to buy a house.

A few things. First of all people need to research unemployment. Anything is better than nothing but the amount per month in California is small and the number of months you can collect is highly limited.

Next, I wish people would stop over dramatizing. It's a layoff. It isn't anybodies favorite thing, but it happens fairly commonly in the rest of the world.

And finally, good luck to everyone who is working hard to be a positive part of the future of LLNL. Hopefully we'll all make it through.

Golly gosh, Pollyanna, some of "us" won't make it through. Why there's the 500 who already are gone. And then maybe 200 or so within a couple of weeks. Probably another 500 in a month or so after that. But then I guess they're not in the positive part so if you shut your eyes real tight, you won't see them, and you plug your ears real good, you won't hear them, either.

Oh, but it's "just a layoff". Just people's whole careers down the toilet. Just someone's livelihood gone. No need for drama. After all, you've still got your job, and it's so easy to ignore those colleagues around you slowly going missing. In the words of the immortal Eric Cartman, "Screw you guys!"

Why is the lab hanging on to EBAs?
They should have been the ones to go and many talented SLs and Flexes kept!

I'm not a pollyanna, I'm just tired of all the whining. Get over yourselves. In the "real" world this is business as usual. We are no longer the favored children. Does it suck? Heck yes. Do we need to shutup, focus and do our jobs? Yep. You aren't likely to find a better deal anywhere else and you won't be serving your country.

Anyone who has lived in the "real" world who looks at some of these messages is going to think "What a bunch of spoiled out of touch cry babies". And they would be dead on.

I don't think you understand. We gave up good salaries to come here for the UC affiliation ,the job security, the retirement, and to serve our country. It was a way of life, not just a job.

I agree, but that phase of our live is over forever as it is for everyone else except those at the top. Now the question is, will we be here come tomorrow.

So what's the real number of people that took the VSSOP and when does the ISP start. What day do the people from the ISP have to be gone and out the gate for good. How about it ULM, publish the darn list. We know you already have it in your possession and have had for months. get with the program and give these people advanced notice.

Anonymous said...

I'd be very surprised if ULM has a comprehensive list of people to let go at this point. And they certainly didn't have one months ago.

They've had a list since December of know who they wanted to get rid of. All anyone can hope for is hope those on that list took the VSSOP. If they didn't they're still going to get rid of them very soon, especially knwowing that LLNL is already $69M in the hole for FY-09. ULM needs to clean the house quick. Hold on for more rocky road.

They pulled it out of their fannies if that is the case. Do you really think they know anything about anyone more than a level or two below them? The vast majority of us are just names in a database to them. The 3161 plan spells out clearly the basic idea. Reduce the overall workforce with the less skilled 500's taking a bigger hit than the 300's and 200's. Beyond that there is no list (yet) and no grand conspiracy. They just aren't that all knowing/seeing.
