Alcohol on site?

Treating like adults: Why isn't alcohol allowed on site anymore? This is the usual over the top, over reaching reaction.
It's safer to just restrict.
Must wear bicycle helmets (like required only for children outside the fence), or how about just no bicycles at all.
This is lab leadership and decision making. Why should we expect any better when coming to programmatic and strategic decisions?

OK, so you want it be ok with your employer that you alter your mental state (i.e., degrade it) while you are on your employer's property and under his legal liability?? Grow up. There is nothing about "adult" in that opinion. Go home and suffer your own liability for what you choose to do.

Because the previous director got caught by security bringing alcohol on site..his fix was to change the rules and allow alcohol on site. Typical management manipulation.

The previous director allowed unopened bottles on site because he got caught with some bottles he was taking to a dinner later. He thought the rule preventing that was absurd and changed it when he became director. Why is that "typical management manipulation"? Seems like common sense. He was always asking why some rules were the way they were and changing them if they didn't make sense. Remember personal cells on site?

Can't bring guns on site despite the 2nd amendment, so I'm not sure why anyone would expect to be able to bring alcohol on-site.

The previous director changed a number of stupid rules. He supposedly got caught with unopened wine he was taking to a dinner after work, which is when he found out about the rule (remember that he wasn't a career labbie). I heard that when the guard said something to him he thought at first it was a joke. So when he later became director he changed the rule to allow unopened bottles on site. He supposedly also allowed drinks in his office like was already allowed in the Jade room.

I think the point of this blog is that leaders are way too cowardly.
Bicycle helmets, or just ban bikes altogether, which is coming. Scores points with the Moms I guess.

It's all about liability. Who knows whether you can ride a bike competently? Or whether you can drink responsibly? Do you want a 70+ year old riding a bike in traffic? Or a person who is already drunk (from lunch) consuming additional alcohol on site and then causing an accident or worse off site? Try to think like a company whose liability insurance is already ruinously expensive, instead of like employees who cannot wait to get home to engage in risky behavior. It all winds up costing you as taxpayers. Some taxpayers don't want to pay for your little perks such as alcohol and bikes.

Apparently it is a "big deal" for LLNS, as it should be for liability reasons. If you fail to see that, I'm glad you're not in charge of anything.

I think the point of this stream, is that there is certainly a condescending view of the work force, and that management goes for the easy issues rather than really making the lab a great place to work.

It is not managements job to make the labs a great place to work as some would say that a place where you can drink on sight all day, play in a sandbox, be a cowboy, act arrogant or special makes for a great place to work. Not so. managements job is to see to that the job can be done safely and securely. For whatever reasons that culture at the labs is rotten. Maybe being told they are soo smart just makes people go gaga and act like children. Maybe not enough of the scientists had to serve in the military. I don't know but we can all agree the culture has been the driving force behind the problems at the labs. The blog is filled with such culture. We need workers to say "how high" when asked to jump, not people who say "why do I have to jump?". It is not your position to ask why it is you position to do what you told to do.

Was that Mike Anastasio? I saw him in his pajamas at Santa Fe Trader Joe's with two, not one but two shopping carts full of wine. It appears Mike likes his vino. Darn you Livermore guys got good taste.
