Opinion on blog moderation

Anonymously contributed:
I see someone complained that the term "fanboi" was insulting and you removed a post involving that term.

I was quite surprised to see that. Especially given snide comments from others about "best and brightest indeed" and another thread mentioning the term "hayseed".

Last time I checked, fanboi was merely a term for ardent enthusiast and not an insult.

I'm not about to demand that someone using the term "hayseed" be purged either. I'm over 21 and not going to get my little feelings hurt. In fact, it made for a good tongue-in-cheek reply to that comment.

Naturally it is your blog and your rules. I've done my bit to help keep it alive, but have no interest in staying around if some people are allowed to make personal attacks and then go running to you for "moderation". Is the playing field even or not?

Thank you for your contribution.
I do my best but fail sometimes.
Please feel free to stick around. If you stop visiting, hopefully it is not because of moderation mistakes

The rules of the blog don't forbid insults nor snide comments, the rules forbid name calling. Fanboi is clearly name calling.

Read the rules of the blog more closely before you post next time. This blog doesn't need the support of somebody who isn't interested in abiding by the blog rules, or in this case just doesn't want to bother to read them.

This goes for you too, moderator. Why you kowtow to this guy is beyond me. I think you need to read and understand the rules. After all, you wrote them.

Hey 3/27 7:33AM!
I will read the rules a few hundred times so they stick in. My bad!

Alright, cyber bullies win.

Go ahead and make all the inferences you want. You are always right and anyone else clearly has not done their research, deserves snide comments, and if needed you can call up Scooby to censor anything you don't like using flimsy nuances of so-called rules that only apply to some here.

Change the title of this blog to "LLNL - 1 person's high and mighty opinion".

I'm outta here.

scooby,

Whatever you do, do not let this become the vituperative LANL blog, reborn. Limit LANL-related posts, and keep your distance, lest your fingers be burned.

Scooby takes a lot of time off, doesn't he? No chance of a rela-time post-and-reply blog here. Too bad. I guess CA is just really laid-back - about to be laid-off? Any way, no fun.

A little common sense goes a long way. Instead of whining over a bad post, be thankful it wasnt printed, and try again with something more relevant to the subject.

Good job scooby, keep up the great blog.

Hey 8:48PM!
Time off from what? Got a job, family and other obligations like everyone else.
What do you recommend for this BLOG to be "real-time"?

I think that this blog should be moderated in a way that only allows posts with cheery and uplifting thoughts.

That way, every thing that has happened to help destroy the NNSA labs can be quickly forgotten.

"I think that this blog should be moderated in a way that only allows posts with cheery and uplifting thoughts."-- this has to be a California post. That why that state and the country is in such bad shape. Lackadaisical attitudes and no wish to face reality. It's all so good, lets just forgive and forget. NEVER !

You missed the point of the March 31, 2010 7:32 PM post. Here in California we read the entire post before we comment. You New Mexicans seem to think you have special mental powers that allow you to read a sentence or two and divine the rest. Must be the area 51 influence.

I think timely approval of posts is essential if blog posters are to be able to reply to posts in a time frame that makes sense and keeps the conversation going. If not, this blog thus becomes just a time-stamped sequential record that is not a useful tool for discussion.

I think an owner of a blog like this one has a responsibility to take a few minutes several times a day to approve posts. How long does it take to review posts to determine suitability and adherence to rules?

How about if you volunteer to be a co-moderator? That way, you can feel free to spend more time making this BLOG real-time?
I have spent time daily since December 10th 2007 trying to keep it alive.
If you think this BLOG is not useful, please don't let the door hit ......

Amen. It's easy to stand on the sidelines and throw spitballs. Different story if you are running the blog.

Is it a coincidence that the two most recent posts involve incomplete sentences? Any attempts at obfuscation here?

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
