Abandoned and foreclosed homes don't use much energy, closed factories are a big savings, unemployed people can't afford gas or vacations. In a few more years we'll be living in tents and save a lot of energy, won't everybody be happy then!
I'm glad anon 9:00a said it. Energy use isn't down because we choose to do with less or we've found alternative ways to maintain our pleasant North American lifestyles with the same or reduced amounts of energy. Its because the tortured finances of government, businesses, and individuals force these conditions.
Sorry, can't bring myself to think that this is a good thing.
It is ironic that LLNL states that we're using less energy when the Lab itself with NIF and the Computer Center will be increasing the demand. But I guess an extra 10-15 megawatts of consumption is still cheaper than resurrecting field tests and certainly more palatable to the political arena than making craters in Nevada.
