UC opening for Lab 'Management'

UC opening for Lab 'Management'

Frank Munger had this item from a few days ago.

Darling was reported to be very close to Atkinson, both at UCSD and UCOP, but did not appear to be as near and dear to the present UCOP leadership. Some may recall his involvment in 'managing' the LANL interactions with Congress a few years ago.

"Bruce Darling named NAS executive officer

Bruce B. Darling, currently vice president for laboratory management at the University of California, has been named the new executive officer of the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council.

"His transition from the university to NAS will occur over the next several months," the NAS announcement said. "He will succeed E. William Colglazier, who now serves as science and technology adviser at the U.S. Department of State."

Here are the comments I brought in from "suggestions". I normally dont do that. The post was made on 1/29 but I did not get the chance to post it until today.

"in 'managing' the LANL interactions with Congress a few years ago."

Was he the guy that when asked "is
there is anything at LANL that cannot be done elswhere and it would be hard to close down LANL" told the congressman that it would cost several million dollars to move everything out of Los Alamos? I remember the congressman seemed very confused by the answer.

In F & I @ LLNL we are being forced to fill out "Bio Sheets" which are nothing more than resumes and you must include a up to date photo! The question of the day is this being done other places at the lab? What's anyone's comments on this action?

Millions to close. Billions to keep open . What's so hard about that math?

THE REASON YOU ARE BEING FORCED TO FILL OUT BIO SHEET AND HAVE A PHOTO TAKEN IS BECAUSE LLNS (RECHTEL) IS GETTING READY TO DO AWAY WITH THE 300 SERIES; IF YOU HAVE A DEGREE YOU WILL BE MADE A 249; NO DEGREE BACK TO BEING A 500 WITH A PAY CUT TO FOLLOW. NOTE LLNS ADDED A NEW SECTION IN THE PPM MANUAL FOR DEMOTIONS. AND YES THIS IS BEING DONE LAB WIDE.

Where did you come up with this information? Seems a little radical don't you think? Besides all classifacations are having to fill out a Bio!

Maybe a soft landing spot for a recently retired executive? George or Mike?

Are you so new to blogs that you haven't yet learned that all caps is equivalent shouting?? Please refrain, it just makes you look stupid. Turn off your caps lock and calm down. Or, keep it up, if you want people to just scroll past you.

Scooby removed an important communication from someone from Livermore indicating that several nuclear weapon managers from Livermore were being transferred to LANS. Could someone please provide information on this, e.g., why, who, when?

Scooby has a bad habit of editing.

"Editing" no. Random censorship, yes. If there is an actual agenda, it's a weird one.

UCOP did not appreciate the negative publicity that fell on them for the way that they conducted the LANL Director search. The LLNL one looks like it was completed in a much better form. This departure may be part of that fall out.

"Trying to keep up" is not the same as "deleting posts for no reason". That you end every response to a complaint with a "don't let the door hit you" comment means you are not really enjoying this. What's your solution? It seems obvious to everyone but you. Dude.

Breathe everyone breathe. I know we're all frustrated working at what used to be great institutions. Let's get back on track trying to help each other out through this "mess". As Rodney King said "can, can, can, we all get along"?

Also, give Snoopy a break, he's trying to do the "right thing".

Sorry Scooby, I get you confused with Snoopy, both upstanding cartoon characters.

As much as we like to see a conspiracy where ever we look, perhaps Darling took the job at NAS because it would be a break from haggling with NNSA and Bechtel. You know, get back to seeing some basic science done with a few less IWS and Web classes needed every step of the way.

As to the side thread that opened up here about Bio Sheets, not happening in my neck of the woods. Have not heard of the 300 series class being eliminated, just think of the overtime charges that might be incurred if that move were made.

My understanding of the "Bio Sheet" resume thing is that apparently some areas of the lab elevated people to 300 series titles when in fact they were not deserving of such. The resume (and I hear an oral presentation) were to see if a person was qualified to hold that title. Many years ago when the lab was losing desktop support people left and right SND charged ahead and re-classed a lot of folks to get them a higher pay in order to keep them. It was argued by some that a number of the people who were re-classed were not deserving. The IT world was booming and that was a necessary ploy in the minds of some, to keep people on board.

I have not heard that the 300 series was being eliminated.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

Rumor corner

LLNS may have excluded the wrong people in last VSSOP? The exclusions were based on outdated job categories and related skills. ULM are now thinking that in the future, job categories and functional areas will have to be re-defined. The next VSSOP/ISP will be based on the new categories and functional areas. The questions I have are: 1) Why didnt they think of that before the transition. It seems like their style is “change things as you go”. Planning is out the window! 2) Who will give input on the new changes? The next RIF apparently is going to be more lucrative than the VSSOP. Depending on the length of employment, a RIFed person, not only gets their 1 week pay per year of service but also from 30 to 120 days notice, essentially 30 to 120 days pay. Please feel free to comment on the rumors or add new ones you actually heard.
