Modesto Bee Staff Reports

LIVERMORE -- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is downsizing its security staff now that the last of the highest-level special nuclear material has been removed from the research center.
The lab filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act reduction in force notice this month, which reported that 126 employees were being let go as a result of the changes.
The layoffs will only affect members of the lab's security work force who are no longer needed or funded because of the center's nuclear status changes. Those include police officers, police sergeants and health-safety technologists.
The first voluntary separations will take place this month and the final involuntary separations will occur by March.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

What next, will they announce the guard changing times and staff levels per hour?
There's probably more SNM at some of the DOE science labs and university's with training/research reactors than LLNL these days.
I don't think you have much to worry about bubba since there's absolutely nothing left at LLNL requiring protection unless you're talking about the work force. Understanding a terrorist mission is to inflict mass causalities I don't think any security force is going to stop them if they’re determined to take out a target. 9-11 proved that. Regardless these people need job and the best way to let the public know they’re for hire is to post their availability. Nothing on this blog is any different than what has appeared in the local newspaper’s which is where the verbiage of the original post came from. If you want to talk about information that was and is detrimental to the United States let’s talk about what was disclosed on national TV by some un-named jackrabbit such as the team involved in taking out Osama Bin laden, divulging the content of what was obtained during the raid, giving them time to evacuate and unable to be found and then telling the Iranians we planted a virus in their network to obstruct their uranium enrichment process. Who was that? There’s nothing on this blog that could do any harm compared to that fiasco.
Let's wish these folks well. They accomplished the assigned mission (protection of SNM at LLNL). NNSA has been working for years to consolidate, just to realize the savings represented by this RIF (and others like it). This is a good thing for taxpayers, but unfortunately not such a good thing for these particular people. I say thanks & well-done and wish them all good luck in future endeavors.

Thanks for the kind words.
Whining has become so common here it sounds just like a public sector union. Oh wait, it is.
