UC is done!

UC is done with the whole thing, UNM and UNLV should run LLNL, LANL and Sandia. Unless someone can make money of this thing why bother? What is done at NNSA labs that cannot be done better and cheaper or not at all elsewhere? Bechtel can modernize an entire nation like Iraq to a more advanced level than Switzerland in a brutal war-zone but it cannot make workers have respect for management authority to NNSA labs? Tell me what is wrong with this picture and if you can you have the reason why UC has no interest in running these out of control labs.

UC founded LLNL. It began as a division of LBNL. I know as a direct fact that neither UC (Regents or President) will surrender without a big fight a lab that UC started and carries the name of UC's first Nobel Laureate. The Govenor is also a Regent, and the state legislature would grill UC for not fighting to the end to keep another state's university out of California.

Why would the UC want to remain involved with the NNSA labs? The whole system is a joke of its former self. This isn't 1950 either, the UC system doesn't support the NW mission anymore. There was exactly one opportunity to get the UC system involved, and that was at the beginning. Today, there is no reason why they would take on the bad PR and liability of being involved with NNSA.

Agreed there is no way UC wants anything to do with the pure mess that are the NNSA labs, if Bechtel cannot run these places than why would UC want to ran them, it just does not make any sense. There is no money, lots of headaches, cowboys, attitudes, arrogance, and jerks with Phd's, in other words a total mess.

I know of one defense contractor that took a look at the labs, then decided they did not want anything to do with them, and will not put in a bid or even try to get any contract work, going forward. I am not sure why. I will try to find out.

A UC-Battelle LLC for LLNL makes the most sense and would be a home run bidding team. Remember that the Battelle CEO Jeff Wadsworth was a Deputy Director at LLNL.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. Rumor corner

LLNS may have excluded the wrong people in last VSSOP? The exclusions were based on outdated job categories and related skills. ULM are now thinking that in the future, job categories and functional areas will have to be re-defined. The next VSSOP/ISP will be based on the new categories and functional areas. The questions I have are: 1) Why didnt they think of that before the transition. It seems like their style is “change things as you go”. Planning is out the window! 2) Who will give input on the new changes? The next RIF apparently is going to be more lucrative than the VSSOP. Depending on the length of employment, a RIFed person, not only gets their 1 week pay per year of service but also from 30 to 120 days notice, essentially 30 to 120 days pay. Please feel free to comment on the rumors or add new ones you actually heard.
