Can we just stipulate that National Labs are incredibly bloated by bureaucracy, adherence to asinine regulations, and fundamentally incapable of not buying the next new shiny in the name of science?
Gordon-Haggerty's budget fight with the White House is necessary. To much to do too little time. I hope the Senators get to force a change.
I don't thing they are spending enough money.
The fact is that we have had nearly 40 years where productivity of the Labs has never been a priority. Our productivity has tumbled into the gutter and we waste so much time and money that it should be a massive scandal. No safety or security risk is too small to be over-reacted too. Risk aversion runs rampant. We are governed by paranoia and fear.
This attitude is far broader than the NNSA Labs, it is society wide and plagues the bloated defense budget too. Every single weapons system is over budget and over schedule. We are squandering any technological advantage we have as a nation, and new technology is kept out of our weapons due to largely paranoid fears.
Either we change our attitude toward all this or we will suffer a horrible fate as a nation.
Lot's of "we's" in there. Leave me out of your self-flagellant "we". Some of us are doing the right thing, every single day. Maybe if "you" change "your" attitude, everything will be fine.

Yep, that's going to work and make everything OK. What exactly is the "right thing"? My attitude is just fine, and that makes very little difference. Your comment is the proverbial Ostrich head in the sand.

Sounds a bit over the top to me.
How very you of you. I think I'll just continue to do what I think is right, and completely ignore what you think is right. OK?

But this has been your problem for a very long time. Perhaps it is time to consider that you need actual evidence before you think
you are right.

Just go ahead, our adversaries will be very pleased with your actions. If you think that American power is supreme, and we don't need to start doing things differently, you are part of the problem.
Americans who can't envision doing things better are simply doing the work of the enemy. You are simply assisting our enemies in defeating us.

Wow, now that is a straw man argument. This makes no sense whatsoever. I get it you have a problem with the labs. There is plenty to criticize in a sane and reasonable manner, you are adding nothing to the conversation but noise. You do you and let the adults have a real conversation.
Agree. People who are convinced the only "right" thing to do is completely remake all of society and all of politics and all of government into their idea of nirvana are just noise. The world is what it is. You have to start from where you are. And you have to convince the people where you are that your idea is better than any other. Good luck with that. It's called democracy.
As for the labs, if you are starting from "I hate them and everything they stand for," especially due to some past grievance, real or imagined, the idea that "we are governed by paranoia and fear" is a little silly.
