We need to defund nuclear weapons and slash defense spending.

Ridiculous. Trump has only been president for less than four years and has gotten very little of his agenda through. To assert that Trump has dug us into a hole that has been 30 years in the naming is pure politics. Regardless, who cares whether the R&D focus is on nukes or whatever else. Just keep the dollars flowing and the people in the DOE will do the work.

I don’t think Clinton was arguing for defunding the military or nuclear weapons complex. I thought it was a very good article about changing priorities, which is long overdue. This is an indication that things are going to change for the NNSA under the Biden administration. Don’t expect 20% yearly funding increases with hiring sprees.

I think the point is pretty clear that funding will decrease in NNSA under Biden. Now money may increase in other agencies but it will most certainly decrease in the NNSA. So all this hiring is going to be a huge mistake. I would guess that the whole pit production thing is going be majorly reduced. Read the article again it is very clear that they think spending 1 Trillion dollars on NW is a bad idea.

For once, she’s probably right. “Newer and fewer” IS the right answer for nuclear weapons. The problem, of course, is that we need MUCH newer and far fewer. Cost savings will never materialize in either case.

New and fewer just means fewer which is a good thing. The military budget is going to shrink big time from here on out. You can spin it as changing priorities, fighting new battlefronts ect, but yes the budgets are going to shrink and the United for once may start to act like a civilized nation like those in Europe that do not spend so much money on military crap but provide services for the people. The idea of American as a superpower is not very popular, and all that money could be better spent on transforming our police, making college affordable to everyone which should be right, making sure everyone has housing which should be right, making sure everyone has healthcare which should be right, making sure everyone does not have to be worried about being killed by the police which should be a right, making sure that the global climate change is not an existential threat, making sure that everyone can live a dignified life, making sure a few do not take all money for themselves. Sweden and Norway do not have nuclear weapons and are not just doing fine but are far better places to live than the US. We should get the message and start changing our ways.

Do we really need 3 labs, do we really need this many nuclear weapons or any for that matter, do we really need aircraft carriers, do we really need the F-35? I simply do not see how the NNSA labs have anything to offer the people of the United States or the world in terms of improving lives, creating diversity and equality for all.

If you think those are responsibilities of national security laboratories charged with nuclear weapon development and national security, you are insane.

When you finally realize that the nuclear weapon labs mission is not about "improving lives, creating diversity and equality for all." then you will quit worrying about it, and get a good night's sleep.

That is a fair point, however the the most important issues of our time is mproving lives, creating diversity and equality for all. During the cold war maybe NW where relevant but that era is over. Our challenge, our calling and our cause is now diversity and equality for all. That is where the funding should be going.

Funny, it seems China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan all think nuclear weapons are still relevant.

India, France, UK...

Wishing that NW are irrelevant does not make it so.
Also, I don't understand "equality for all." Last time I checked, that experiment failed. If you want to make NW more relevant than they already are, continue down this path of "equality for all."

China is only a threat because of Trump, once he is gone China will become much more friendly. In many ways NK and Iran are justified in the stances due to the American imperialism. As for Russia yes they are the biggest threat and they will not be happy when their puppet is removed.

If America reduced is NW capabilities many smart people say that that the other nations will soon follow. In other words most NW in the world are just a reaction to the US.

By the same logic, if the police give up their arms, then the gangs and armed assailants will give up theirs. "In other words, most guns in the US are just a reaction to the police."

Good luck with that line of reasoning!

Actually this is not just my line of thinking but is is also the same logic of Critical Race Theory that states the high level of police is a direct cause of high violence and crime in minority neighborhoods. The police cause a huge amount of stress on people who think they could be killed at any moment by the police this stress and also the knowledge that the police are part of a system of oppression causes many to feel that they are simply not part of the system so they resort to crime as the only way to get ahead or blow of steam. If the police are abolished crime would not go away but it would be greatly reduced as people would feel much safer and calmer.

"...many smart people say...".

Your post is actually racist by CRT standards. Cause and effect are considered "white values". I am not kidding about this. Below is a
link to some of the ideas from CRT.

https://www.newsweek.com/smithsonian-race-guidelines-rational-thinking-hard-work-are-white-values-1518333

Just a few things from this list of things that are a problem according to CRT world prospective as aspects of "WHITENESS"

"Planning for the future"
"Follow rigid time schedules"
"Objective Thinking"
"Delayed Gratification"

and yes

"Cause and effect relationships"

You can read the rest for yourself but be assured that this is coming as mandatory lab training and you better go along with this or else.

After reading the comments on this blog for the past few months, I am now in favor of re-establishing the draft. That should take care of these whiners.

CRT addresses this as well. Minorities are over represented in the military as it is and CRT argues that this is due to racism.

So the people of color joining the military voluntarily are racist? Or the military people accepting them are racist?

I think the assertion is that society considers minorities expendable and only allows them to work in certain jobs like the military. The thing is CRT can explain everything and the opposite.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
