LLNL's in Memoriam

Has the “LLNL In Memoriam” weblink been cancelled?

The link is still up, but perhaps it hasn't been updated for a while. Or maybe death took a holiday for us old (ahem, mature) folk.

Possibly the person doing the updating is sick, quit, fired or software that does the searching for the obits has stopped.

Or maybe the lab doesn't want to expend the expense of supporting the effort anymore, and like an old soldier, the website will just fade away. It ain't your dad's laboratory anymore.

The laboratory has become a leaner/meaner operation over its history. In the old days you could get a guest red badge as a retiree and visit cohorts at the cafeteria, but even before that you could visit your former co-workers at cafeterias that were in the open area.

The 9/11 attack changed that mindset.
The link between present and past employees became less tenuous and that certainly was exacerbated on the contract change and the subsequent layoffs.

The lab needed to justify expenditures but even more so in the for profit days. Remember the lab pool getting shut down, mainly for costs of repair but I would bet that a lawyer might have pointed out that a drowning on the site would probably diminish a contract bonus.

It costs money to publish a Newsline, maintain a webpage and if it becomes a matter of employee morale vs a manager bonus given for cutting costs, the morale may suffer.

Of course the lab esprit de corp may be less than what it was during my era, but that is something that can be said of society as a whole.

Things change, some will believe for the better, others will disagree.

That's a reason why this and the LANL blog were created.

Kinda of self explanatory. If you don't get just assume the the message is is not for you. But yes it sure is heck is not your dads lab anymore, we can all agree on this. No matter where you find yourself,... there you are. This is a good summary of the labs that needs no explanation.

I don't think this is what he wanted. No need to write a book.

The labs before 2000, great, strong science, stuff mattered, good managers, pride in mission that mattered, pride in the past.

The labs today, horrible, 3rd rate, anti science, no one cares as it just a job, it is all about profit, the new people have no idea what was ever done at the labs. It is all money and special interests.

I respectfully disagree only on your “leaner” point. LLNS isn’t leaner than UC/LLNL in my view, in fact they are more expensive with no mission value added for the additional yearly expense.

Meaner? I think true for-profit companies in the real competitive free market, can’t afford to be tone deaf to employee needs and employee morale, because their service or product customer base ($$$) would suffer in a hurry. Not so much with a for-profit* that has a contract with the Federal Government. Past DOE and other Government officials have come to a similar conclusion, which may lead to a non-profit running LLNL next time around.

You cannot state accurately that "we can all agree on this," when you've been disagreed with.

"We can all agree " was for the people that have worked at the labs, work at the labs, or have some idea about the labs, we can all agree on that .

Leaner? That is good one.

10:16 I have done all those things and I disagree with almost all of your argument points. Your bandwagon fallacy is tiring and plainly incorrect at the most fundamental levels.

It's all just opinion. Stop taking yourself so seriously.

Everything is opinion there are no facts to the world at all and certainly not when it comes to the labs. In some way that means you must take things even more seriously since in a world of only opinions it is the ones that believe the most or who have the most faith that win. I guess there is no way to know how the labs used to be, no way to know how the labs are now. We have no awareness of anything beyond what we can take. This world is the will to power--and nothing besides. And you yourselves are also this will to power--and nothing besides.

Ok, Mr. Mystic Seer. Your overwhelming vision of truth and your perspicuity astound all who gaze on your written wisdom. Now go away, you annoy me.
