I would assume the statements in that video may be a sort of "hype" but perhaps this is the next big thing.
It also would seem to be the case, that mass production of robots would require rare earth minerals, as well as various materials for batteries, fuel cells, structural elements and so on. As these are not available in unlimited quantitites the robots will not be either, in the near future.
And of course, the total world industrial output is $16 trillion, if 25% of that were devoted to $8000 robot construction, that would be 500 million robots per year. As a technology good they would face obsolence after a few years, and also require maintenance, so robots would remain much less numerous than people worldwide for many years, unless some disaster reduces the human population
Can we get robots to build pits?
LANL is in a weird situation. It wants and needs to be more efficient to build pits and get them done in a timely fashion. Yet if become more efficient and built pits much more rapidly it would be save money and we would need less people, however the metric for success at LANL is the amount of money it gets and the number of people it employees. In that sense there is no motivation to really be efficient or get things done or reduce the workforce. The only motive would be to have money cut if things do not get done, on the other hand if things do not get done LANL could get even more money as they could always claim that we simply do not have enough money and people to get things done. Odd situation, as such I do not think we will LANL will be very interested in getting robots to replace LANL workers any time soon.
