Well tomorrow or early this week should be the beginning of a stressful time for some and the end of a stressful year for others, well, at least until George doesn't get as many people as he would like to have. I hear 730 to begin with. Then comes more stress when he says, well I was hoping for more but I have no choice but to let 300 FTE go by April 2008. Sorry but we have to cut cost, while on the other hand shows that each person at LLNL cost between $400K and $600K plus on the lab pricers. I saw a picture running around on the old blog somewhere of an executive type in a white shirt, slacks and a tie on. The VIP had his head stuck up his butt all the way to the shoulders as the tie flopped to the side. I think it was entitled, cranium rectum inversion. I'd say it's time for this picture to surface once again in honor of LLNS futile exercise of reducing manpower cost by laying off people and doing absolutely nothing that will in fact resolve the "real" issues. If anyone can find the picture please post at the very top when the VSSOP announcement comes out on this blog.

Many people got this notice by e-mail. Does anyone know why it was sent out and why it only went to a selected few. Are those who got this being told, "you've been selected for departure at a given date and we need to know where you are at all times so we can give you the final word or escort you out the gate"?

This is very important!

There is going to be a Laboratory wide announcement this week. This means, I need know your schedules for the next three days, including:

* Will you be here, I need to know where you are. Other than short runs to other buildings, I will need to get in touch with each of you at a moments notice. Stay in touch with me if you plan on being away from your phone. Pager is the next best. Please wear them.

* If you are taking vacation, I need a phone number where I can reach you at a moments notice.

* If you go on sick leave or think you may go on sick leave, I need a phone number where I can reach you at a moments notice.

* If you are on travel or planning to be on travel, I need a phone number where I can reach you at a moments notice.

I apologize for not being able to give more information at this time. Other than the obvious question, please call me if you have any others.

Keep in touch.

I wonder if I should file an OSHA complaint for a dangerous work environment. This kind of un-neccessary, premeditated stress can kill.

Nope. Group Leaders were asked to know where employees are this week so they can be readily contacted.

My guess is a massive midnight circle jerk to complement our wonderfully inane sexual harassment training.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
