NNSA announces decisions to transform national security enterprise December 17, 2008

The plan to transform and downsize the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) infrastructure moved forward Tuesday as the head of NNSA signed two formal decision documents to begin its implementation. That action allows the agency to continue the process of moving from an aging, Cold War-era nuclear weapons complex into a 21st century national security enterprise.

“We can now start moving forward on much-needed consolidation and reductions throughout our national security enterprise, shifting to more cost effective operations that will save the taxpayer money,” said NNSA Administrator Thomas D’Agostino. “This will improve the safety and security of the infrastructure that maintains U.S. nuclear weapons, helps prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and material, and responds to potential nuclear terrorism or other emergencies.”

The records of decision, signed by D’Agostino, are the final steps in a several year-long process one that involved unprecedented input from the public. The plan, known as “Complex Transformation,” calls for a consolidation of missions and facilities within the existing NNSA sites, known as distributed centers of excellence. While not eliminating any sites, NNSA would eliminate redundancies in missions, capabilities, and facilities at all of them, eventually reducing costs. The decisions will appear in the Federal Register on Friday, Dec. 19.

what does "last act of defiance for being booted by the obamanator"mean?

If it means D'Agostino is putting the finishing touches on "complex transformation" to get back at Obama then you need to sit down and review what has been going on for the past several years with regard to the nuclear weapons complex.Put another way, you don't know what you are talking about (as usual).

If it means something else try to use terms the rest us understand and please explain yourself.

Tell us what "you lose" means. Who is "you". What did "you" "lose". A contest, freedom, a wallet? What exactly was lost.

There is a lot more activity about this subject on the LANL blogg. I suggest people follow the discussion closely. If you ask me its time to cut your losses and run, unless of course you work in the weapons area and feel confident about the next round of restructuring that may be coming.

Well since we're on the topic of lay-offs and how they will destroy America it looks like the auto makers are going to get there's next. What do you think. Does an orderly bankruptcy mean it will take two years like LLNL or maybe four? Downsizing and loss of mission is a bad thing no matter who it is for.

Looking around some areas of the Lab are relics from the Cold War. Some systems are from the 60's. Some of these unused areas should be shut down.
Also I've heard there are earthquake reinforcing issues for some areas that could cost alot to bring up to code.
Sorry if this sounds too logical. Should I add some long winded ranting.
I am happy to have a job but I do miss having a career!

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
