DOE IG Finds no Problems with Livermore Strategy to Maintain Guard Force
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Retention bonuses paid to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory guards to keep them at the site as it downsized its security posture were reasonable, the Department of Energy’s Inspector General said in a report released yesterday. The IG said it investigated claims that the lab experienced “excessive” security costs while it maintained security to protect Category I/II special nuclear material, but it found no problem with $15.2 million in retention bonuses distributed from Fiscal Year 2010 to FY 2012 that helped the site maintain its guard force. The NNSA said Friday that it had completely removed special nuclear material requiring the highest, and most expensive, levels of protection, and that it expects to save $30 million a year by reducing security at the lab. In its report, the IG said that guards earned $50,000 bonuses if they stayed at the lab through Sept. 30, 2012. “According to a Livermore official, the retention bonuses helped to maintain the number of security personnel at the levels required for Security Category I/II protection throughout the deinventory, as well as maintain the morale amongst the impacted security personnel,” the IG said. The NNSA also authorized a 12-month transition phase through Sept. 30, 2013, to help guards move to other jobs after the deinventorying effort was complete. The lab will lay off guards over the next few months as part of a workforce restructuring plan.

Glad to see it. I just wish they'd think enough of me to get $50K. I could use this right now considering there will be no pay raises for the 'workers" for many years to come but they are going to take 7% in 2013 to make sure TCP-1 is fat and happy.
“science on schedule is a hard thing to do".
Hey Ed, isn't that what we paid you to do?
The salaries of the hardworking research scientists have been pretty much stagnant for several years.
Meanwhile, the for-profit LLC executive managers get annual 20% bonuses and the security guard get an extra $50,000 per year!
Something is very wrong at the NNSA science labs.
Read the article. It's not 50K per year. This was paid to retain Officers so that the lab can continue it's mission. Anonymous @ 29 Sept. I'm glad too. Lets see who you call when real help is needed.
Question? If there is a 12 month transition to help the guards transition to another job (a good thing) why is the layoff happening so soon?
Smoke and mirrors. There are no jobs for the guards to transition to. They are being laid off.
Lawrence Livermore lab is a great place to work at except working at the protective force division. There is very little or no talent in this division.
Most of the guys there are a bunch of wanna be hardcore soldiers and cops, specially the Special Response Team or (SRT) instructors and officers.
The truth is that the PFD instructors and officers are just over paid Security Guards! These guys have no authority! As a matter of fact, they have less authority than Security Guards that you see at your local bank!
The only thing left of the security guards are a bunch of old broke down left overs from UC. And they complain about everything, even having a easy job. Wait until they go with contract security like at Sandia. Then you will see young guards, eager to provide customer service.
Don't be fooled by the PFD guys thinking that that they Law Enforcement in any way, shape, or form. These guys are 100% Security Guards and have 0 authority!!!
The protective force division officers are a bunch of lazy and incompetent guys. "They are not law enforcement!" "They are Security Guards!"
If something was to happen there, they would have to call local law enforcement to respond because they have no authority.
They only thing that they are allowed to do there is observe and report suspicious activity.
These have have less authority than a Walmart Security Guard!
PFD officers have less authority than Walmart Security Guards!!!!!!
What do you mean that PFD officers have less authority than Walmart Security Guards???
At least Walmart Security Guards have some authority. PFD officers are 100% Security Guards with 0 authority!!!
