The foreign national scientist issue at the NNSA labs is likely to become a significant flash-point once again.
Anyone still remember Rep. Christopher Cox and the Wen Ho Lee fiasco from the mid-1990s?

GOP REP: OBAMA ADMIN ALLOWS HUNDREDS OF CHINESE NATIONALS TO ACCESS SENSITIVE NASA FACILITY
... Hosts Brian Wilson and Larry O'Connor pressed the congressman on the details of the program that allows hundreds of Chinese nationals who work directly with the Chinese Liberation Army to access the Hampton, Va. facility for the National Institute of Aerospace. Wolf revealed that the program is not meant to be a cultural exchange as Americans are not invited to work in Beijing's counterpart facilities. Furthermore, when asked who was responsible for allowing the questionable access to Chinese nationals, Wolf responded simply, "The Obama Administration."

Wen Ho Lee was not a post doc, was a US citizen, and was not Chinese!! He was just a less-clever-than-he-thought, mid-level staff member who thought he could get away with a stupid trick (no longer possible) of moving SRD files to the unclassified partition by simply stripping the classification designation. Too stupid to live, but the COMPSEC people were then (as now) a complete joke, and he got away with it for long enough that some of the stuff is gone forever. Whether he sold it, or just trashed it to remove the evidence, will probably never be known. He was way too stupid to be working for the Chinese at the time, but may have had delusions of grandeur. The way the Feds screwed up the investigation and prosecution is another horrendous story.

"Paisan! Ciao."
A good Italian spy. Creative cover!
Wen Ho Lee is Taiwanese.
March 23, 2013 at 8:31 AM
No, he is American.
The Socialist Dip Speaks Again
He's an American of Taiwanese descent. Happy now?
Maybe you should educate yourself first about socialism, before you call people socialist dip. I don't see anything in the the statement you refer to , which would lead me to think the poster is a socialist.
Please don't bait the baiter.

Either you are for them or against them, there are no two ways about it. You are either a conservative or a socialist. Baiter or not there are actually people who believe this.
" March 23, 2013 at 9:50 AM:

March 24, 2013 at 10:14 AM"
Yes I am happy now. This point was missed over and over again during the Wen Ho Lee incident. To this day people say Chinese national spy. This is when things really started to go downhill at the labs as the concept of truth no longer mattered. The media would say something and the labs would just react. The reaction would then make things worse and would reinforce the initial untrue statements. In the end we have Mustang lady, culture of theft, cowboys, massive amounts of missing superclassfied computers, rampant drug use, cultural problems, fires, mass spy rings, insanity. All of it a load of crap. The real danger is that it cuts both ways. If non-events become real events than real events become non-events because truth no longer has any meaning in such an environment.
This kind of mentality is not confined to the labs. Just look at the war on terror, American completely surrendered to the terrorists by its own actions, since truth no longer had any meaning.
This kind of mentality is not confined to the labs.

Heck, just watch the Weather Channel for a couple of days. The fact is that hype sells! And the media knows this. So do the politicians, and other admen.
March 25, 2013 at 5:10 PM"
It has been refined to science. There is a curve for hype and they know the peak point to sell us everything.
Just look at our broken and constantly bickering Congress. Look at the crooked men who run our financial institutions. People like former Senator Jon Corzine who steal billions and walk the streets free men! We punish those who work hard and play fair and then reward those who lie, steal , cheat and refuse to pull their own weight. Our main stream media is a sick joke when it comes to telling us the important news and the truth. You have to go to overseas web sites in places like the UK to find out what's really happening in America today.
We have reached critical mass for national self destruction. It's almost impossible to get anything constructive or productive done in America today. Bureaucracy has won. It's been sad watching our downfall over the last two decades. The downward slope has begun to steepen over the last few years.
The Soviet Union collapsed very rapidly once they reach the "cliff". Is America heading for the same rapid end?
March 25, 2013 at 10:09 PM"
We are not that bad yet. I would say that the idea of American exceptionalism is coming to an end.
March 26, 2013 at 5:55 AM
At least until we elect a President who believes in it, instead of enabling and encouraging unexceptionalism.
March 26, 2013 at 8:35 AM"
Fair enough but you better count the last two as encouraging unexeptionalsim. You know who I blame for Obama? Bush.
March 26, 2013 at 7:24 PM
I'm a conservative, but there's a lot of truth in that. Among Republican presidents, Bush was not what you'd call a shining star. I think that did make it easier for Obama. Too bad.
You are too stupid to live. Did you notice that your 2007 Democratic talking points paper is a little frayed and worn?

I always vote conservative or libertarian and the 8:38 PM poster is dead on about Bush and Cheney.
Blog dynamics are fascinating. A flame war is ignited in response to an intentional understatement that was intended to be agreeable to almost everybody.

Only a socialist would think this way!
Just see latest update:
http://nasawatch.com/archives/2013/03/bo-jiang-releas.html
"At a detention hearing today, U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Leonard ordered Jiang released after a federal prosecutor acknowledged there is no evidence so far that he was in possession of any sensitive, secret or classified material. Jiang will be under supervision of the federal probation office, will be prohibited from traveling outside the Eastern District of Virginia, and will be tracked by an electronic monitoring system. He has surrendered his passport."
Ex-NASA Langley contractor released on bond, Daily Press
"Jiang's court-appointed attorney, Fernando Groene, said that Jiang didn't have access to sensitive or classified information when he worked at NIA. Groene says that Jiang did violate NASA's policy by taking the equipment out the country, but there was nothing classified on the laptop or hard drive. "NASA has looked at the computer up and down and can't find any information that violates the export control act," Groene said."
Former NASA Langley Research Center pleads not guilty to lying, judge OKs release on bond, Washington Post
"Groene has suggested that Jiang is only in jail and under investigation because U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., has inferred that Jiang may be a spy. Wolf has targeted Jiang in news conferences and congressional hearings about NASA security, saying the space agency is using contractors to get around rules prohibiting citizens of certain countries from working for NASA."
March 31, 2013 at 8:02 AM
Except that WHL actually stole classified material.
If he explicitly gave this classified info to unauthorized people (which no one ever proved in the slightest), then it might be considered an act of "stealing". There was no proof of this in this case.
Get you facts straight about the Wen Ho Lee case before spouting off more racist lies.
March 31, 2013 at 11:45 PM
I have my facts very straight. Computer forensic results were very clear just what WHL did and when he did it, and believe me it was not "sloppiness." Most of the forensic data was never presented in court due to the government's decision (unfortunate IMO) to cut its losses. But the truth is available to anyone who cares to read the Bellows Report. You think SRD documents found in WHL's house was "sloppiness"?
Racist? You have no idea how sick a joke that is.
April 2, 2013 at 8:22 PM
Exactly correct, however, not for the reasons you suppose. He was likely a "wannabe" spy. You suffer from the ignorance of many who only know what they read in the newspapers or hear on the national news. Please accept the proposition that there is much neither you nor most members of the public know about this issue. Please read the Bellows Report before you post again. You will find it heavily redacted because there is still much information that is classified about this case. However, there is still much content remaining to refute your claims. The judge was pissed, and didn't like the government's decision to bail and cut its losses.
April 3, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Doesn't make the argument false. Unless you don't believe in national security classification of information. In which case, you are a fool. The fact remains that the US government still classifies some information about the WHL case. If you disagree with that, fine. But you must accept that it being the case, if you are not privy to that information, you know less than those who are.
April 3, 2013 at 7:54 PM
Well obviously, you can't be convinced of that if you don't have access. What would you suggest? Either you mistrust everything the government does regarding classification, or you recognize that some information needs to be protected. Most of us with security clearances and who deal with classified every day have learned that you can't have access to everything, and you have a solemn (and legal) obligation to protect that to which you do have access. You can believe or disbelieve statements that exceed your access to confirm. But you have to admit that such statements can be made and be true, without your ability to independently confirm them. That's life.
Don't recall selling them to China though, I'll have to check. Perhaps Dr. Lee can mail me his contacts to facilitate the archive search.
Oh yeah and his lawyers names. They can make a load of night soil into sinless Beijing duck.
April 3, 2013 at 11:02 PM
True, but they weren't that good. Only long enough for the government to realize it had more to lose than gain by continuing the prosecution. A distinct failure of foresight - the AG was warned very early but chose to ignore it.12322 hTmdse
April 5, 2013 at 1:26 PM
Wrong. You forgot his mention of "criminal politics" which I believe was his main point. Otherwise why bring it up?
April 5, 2013 at 7:32 PM
Oh, maybe he was referring to non existent WMD (classified), enhanced interogation AKA torture (classified), illegal incarcaration AKA extraordinary rendition (classified), and other monkey bussiness like that.
You think?
April 6, 2013 at 4:11 PM
Yeah, I do, but you don't.
Iraq had WMD and used them on the Kurds. "Torture" has never been defined by the US courts. How US detainees were "waterboarded"?? Exactly three. KSM was waterboarded 183 times. Do you think that after the second or third time he knew he wasn't going to die? He actually cracked after sleep deprivation, not waterboarding. Was that "torture"? If so, tell it to the Nazis, the North Koreans, the Iranians (during the US hostage crisis), the Northern Irish rebels, and the Weather Underground in the US. You need a remedial course in history and a little less PC instruction.
April 6, 2013 at 9:54 PM
Anyone who needs a court decision to help them tell right from wrong is seriously unbalanced, and unfit for life in modern society.
April 7, 2013 at 8:21 AM
So precise definition of terms of discussion in legal matters is undesirable? Let's talk about what it means to "rob" a bank.
