I heard Bret Knapp wants the job. He wants to pretend he's engineer again and he can have any job he chooses. Why? Cause he's GOD!

Yes July 10, 2014 at 9:30 PM, that is surely what the topic question was requesting, the precise date and time of the engineering AD announcement. Try using a little imagination and respond to questions in context. In this case, why the current engineering AD has stayed on ~10 months past her announced retirement. I'm sure there are some thoughtful responses out there, yours not being one of them.

Can anyone give us at LANL a heads-up when Knapp returns? i'd like to retire before his next onslaught at LANL.

Leave now, or better, yesterday.

Umm the admin memo for Monya's retirement is dated June 17, 2013 with the plan to fill it by year end. But they did not specify which year :-) But what a waste to have a lame duck AD for this long.

Engineering has not been the same since Steve Patterson left. The divisions have mutated, programs have suffered the consequences, and morale is very low.

I agree with July 19, 2014 at 7:28 PM. Steve had a vision for what Engineering should be, and what should happen to move us along that path. So did most of his predecessors (even Spiros - remember him?).

Whoever comes next will have a hard time re-establishing that, given the many years we've gone without.

Sounds like a worthwhile and rewarding challenge!

Sign that person up!

A challenge it will be. Rewarding for the candidate or for engineering? Rewarding for both is fine. We can't afford an "its my turn now" by default Engineering AD selection.

I heard that Monya was the first woman Engineering AD at LLNL.

Randy Pico is the first Native American to make engineering tech superintendent then senior superintendent at LLNL.

and she didn't have a PhD. Must be special. See other blogs PhD vs. non PhD.

Management diversity can be a good for an organization.
Except when those climbing such a ladder kick it away and pretend it wasn't a critical element of their success. As they try to assimilate, other minorities and women candidates for management or general career growth are thrown under the bus. It is about succeeding at all cost for some.

Can you quote an objective study that supports this?

I can quote that Germany and Japan are examples to the contrary, the two powerhouse manufacturing and scientific machines.

Can you quote the primary losers of World War 2?
I think you can.

Just remember it was really the eastern front (Russia) that gave the allies the victory, another paragon of diversity.

You seem to forget that Russian women were actively engaged in the fighting, especially in the air. Decades ahead of the West in that aspect of diversity. Or, maybe you just didn't know that?

Interesting point. I assume you agree the Eastern front was where the war was won. If so, are you saying that

1. Since women are participating more at LLNL, that we don't need minorities like in Russia?

or
2. Realize that it was the Russian male foot soldier who took it for the team against the Axis. It was all about the causalities. And no, I don't want to hear about civilians... Russians civilians have always been quite expendable.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
