Hey, how about this: The lab gives only women raises, for a second time, along with overtly obvious promotion preference.

The lab gives only women raises...

Yup, there had been absolutely no evidence of past gender inequities.

overtly obvious

Nice

Women need to work as hard as men. Men who work full-time spend over 20% more hours in the labor force than women who work full-time. Men put in more overtime. Also, women working part-time are often classified as full-time workers (e.g., full-time often means 32 hours/week for 26 weeks/year, with far more women filling this easier role). No, a woman working 32 hours/week for half the year shouldn't be paid as much as a man who works 45 hours/week for the entire year.

Women need to start sacrificing their lives for their families. 93% of workplace fatalities are men. Men deserve fair compensation for accepting this added risk.

Women need to reject work-life balance. Unmarried women without children have slightly higher incomes than unmarried men of the same age without children. A woman's income drops when she chooses to take time off to spend with her children. There is a reason for this.

Best-selling author Warren Farrell said it best. "A woman has three choices: 1) she can work full-time, 2) she can work part-time, or 3) she can stay home with her children. A man also has three choices: 1) he can work full-time, 2) he can work full-time, or 3) he can work full-time."

It may seem unfair to those who believe women are the center of the universe, but in the real-world people are paid what they deserve to be paid.

9:17 Thank you. It is rare that our PC society faces facts head on.

Ms. Hruby pales in comparison to Dr. Charlie McMillan who has a PhD from MIT in physics and Dr. Bill Goldstein who has a PhD from Columbia University in theoretical physics.

Totally agree. The choice is baffling. Ms. Hruby also pales in comparison to a number of her now direct reports. To name a few: Dr. Stephen Rottler who has a PhD from Texas A&M in nuclear engineering and is a Fellow of AAAS and AIAA, Dr. James Peery who has a PhD in nuclear engineering and is a Gordon Bell Award winner, and Dr. Robert Leland who has a PhD from Oxford (Rhodes Scholar) with degrees in EE, applied math and computer science and was a recent White House Fellow. Unlike Ms. Hruby, Dr. Rottler and Dr. Peery actually have a working knowledge of nuclear weapons.

Maybe Hruby understands how to deliver. That would distinguish her from the people you named.

"Maybe" being the operative word. What the heck. Maybe if we hire a woman, she'll be worth something. Awesome strategy for running an organization with 10,000 employees.

Sure wish academic credentials were fully predictive. Let's give Ms. Hruby a chance to see how she handles her new role. Charlie has in no way established a record that preemptively says she cannot hold her own.

"Let's give Ms. Hruby a chance"...

This would never be said for a male for a the same position.
For men it's expectation, for women it's wishful thinking. Quite a different view depending on gender.

If Hruby is worth her "salt" she will immediately institute (or enforce the existing Policy) a Laboratory Policy of equality of men and women at Sandia, in pay, promotions, and treatment. This will never happen, every man and woman for themselves at all the Labs these days.

Wouldn't a policy of performance be the fairest?
A policy of equality means the outcome has already been determined... kind of like LDRD!

Ah, so I don't have to listen to them complain.

Duh

What do you mean by "them"?

More $? More people need to learn how to cook...and clean up after themselves...master the basics first...then move on to fair compensation.

Caitlan Jenner certainly agrees. She increased the average net worth in Calabasas women by thousands.

Go Girl...

or whatever.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
