Rumor: LANS departs in September

Word is leaking out that it will be announced on Monday that LANS is departing in September and an interim management team will operate LANL until a new contract can be competed.

NNSA just cannot get a bid going, NNSA is completely incapable of doing anything anymore. NNSA will need LANS to keep the machine running for several more years at the very least. The next contract will be exactly like the old contract or even worse, there is no way they can move away from the LLC model as the state of New Mexico will not and can not allow it. Maybe the actors will change but not the model and my guess is that it will be Bechtel again. LANL is a monetary white dwarf locked to a binary black hole systems of corporate profit and state revenue and there is no force in the universe that stop this system from collapsing until all the money is gone and the it is admitted that the lab can no longer function and must be shut down. It may last 10 years or more but this is it, all the players see it and are going to get as much cash as they can. The sad part is after it is all over people will ask "how could we have let this happen".

Under Napolitano, UC no longer has the brains or will power to redefine what is needed. Sponsor is morose. Funding inadequate. Customer is very both difficult and ignorant. UC better off leaving LANS.

No one with authority cares about this topic. Therefore the course is ballistic. Only details will change.

It will take a major upset, wmd disaster, accident, or enemy breakout to awaken the level of concern to stimulate helpful action.

Otherwise, the new normal.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
