Good riddance. No one except the local politicians will miss this, and maybe they will finally become more responsible in spending taxpayer money.

Heck yes, the GRT tax was close to criminal in how some of the money is wasted. What they could do
is write NM a check for 10% of what they use to get and maybe NM and the Los Alamos county will use it more wisely.

Hang on now.

501(c)(3) isn't granted and even if it is LANL will still have to pay NM GRT on all of the purchases and contracts.

Oh no! No more ugly, gilt edged buildings! No more repaving Central Ave. every two years!

The LA County waste during the LANS years has been stunning. All that money used to employ people at LANL until it had to be diverted into the county coffers and LANS award fee.

Good riddance doesn’t seem to do it justice.

Can we get rid of the ugly sculptures all over the place, they are hideous. How much money was wasted on this junk?

And, you can bet the council is already thinking about increasing local taxes to make up the difference.

non profit and tax exempt aren’t the same thing

LAC has been reckless with spending. The county council is on autopilot, governed by the very bureaucracy that snorts GRT like crack cocaine. Killing the supply is the first step toward recovery.

How many LANL employees will need to be laid off to find the funds to pay GRT?

Bechtel had the bright idea to convert the craft workers (i.e., the former support services contract) to LANL employees in order avoid paying the contractor its fee (profit). The support services contract was over $100M per year, which amounts to over $8M per year of NMGRT.

Not so bright now, huh?

What is your point, they are mostly cowboys so it is all good.

So how was the county getting by before LANS when UC was running LANL alone and not paying the GRT?

You must be a newby. "Payments in lieu of taxes" from the government. Since UC started. Who do you think owns the Fire Department equipment? Not LA County. All the great fire trucks and ambulances that show up at your home for free if you have a hangnail? DOE owned and paid for. The crews are of course county employees.

In a zero sum game, whether the money to support Los Alamos County comes from GRT or from "Payments in lieu of taxes" from the DOE, it will come out of the LANL operating budget. This equates to fewer jobs at LANL.

" GRT or from "Payments in lieu of taxes" from the DOE, "

The thing is that the payments from DOE before LANS was far far less than the GRT taxes. If they want to return to the money amounts given by the DOE fine, but this will be at least five times lower than the GRT taxes and the county members cannot live with this.

July 15, 2018 at 7:19 AM is incorrect. The payments in lieu of taxes supported schools and services in LA county and DID NOT come from LANL's operating budget, but were negotiated directly between DOE and LA County annually.

Do you really believe that DOE didn't eventually skim those payments out of what they budgeted for LANL? Here's a clue -- DOE doesn't print money.

That may be true but this is on there order of 15 million not 100 million. The GRT is way more than DOE ever gave the town. If LANL wants to chip in 15 million a year like in the old times fine. You will notice that the city council never gives the amount they received before 2006, never because it was vastly lower than what they are getting now.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
