GS looks to be the biggest loser in this new structure?

Well, it is definitely an indication Battelle is driving the boat. Welcome to ORNL West.

Careful look shows that there is not much change in the box for the org chart. There are 13 AD offices in LANS and 12 in Triad, all doing about the same functions. Engineering is no longer a stand alone AD and GS gets kicked down a couple levels in the org. Other than that it might as well be LANS 2.0

LLNL is now the Premiere Weapons Lab.

Welcome to ORNL West.

Yeah, welcome to the "day-in and day-out safety and security issues at Los Alamos" so eloquently stated by Vic Reis in 1997. Battelle has no idea what they got them themselves into. Although, I watched the new Director speak (You Tube video) to LANL staff and you could see the sweat forming on his forehead and above his lips in just two minutes.

The only swamp that has a chance of being drained is Operations. Looks like business as usual in Weapons and Science with Battelle retaining LANS managers. But that all fits since Operations was getting D's and F's the past 11 years in the DOE/NNSA Annual Contract Assessment and Weapons and Science getting straight A's.

You might want to check your facts on those claims. The first 5 years of LANS under Anastasio the scores were all very high, mostly all A's in every category. The last 5 years under McMillan the scores were mostly all low, across the board in all categories.

This probably had less to do with the partners in LANS and more to do with the total and complete incompetence of McMillan.

Vic Reos never said that, however 3 years ago in a talk he did say the for-profit model of LANL and LLNL have been a failed experiment. Vic Reis is also a huge fan of LANL.

It may be true that they scored well but the first 5 years under Anastasio where actually much worse than anything under McMillan. This was during the VSP, and the massive exodus of staff. Also most people think there as cooking of the books those first five years.

Boxology has far less to do and individuals at the top have far more to do with an organization’s effectiveness. Also the absence of the Bectel for-profit influence over the coming months and tears will be a huge change. History will tell how this group (including other senior positions yet to be named) does, specifically under the influence of the Triad non-profit partners. But I don’t think this particular boxology means “expect no changes.”

"Coming months and tears" indeed. Your typo inadvertently tells the truth. No one will be happy until the change sinks in and is accepted as permanent. A couple of years at least.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
