And so it begins... this was in my email today, and speaks to the county of Los Alamos looking to recoup the loss of GRT in the event TRIAD goes non-profit:

The Department of Public Utilities is proposing an increase to sewage rate services. Read the discussion and provide your feedback to the Board of Public Utilities. The public hearing for the proposed sewage rate increase is scheduled for:

To be honest the money from GRT never made sense for the money brought in to what Los Alamos ever got. So where did the money go? The council people seem way to desperate for what is happening if it was all legit. Something just not adds up, perhaps someone should look into where the all the money actually went.

It's always the same story. Tax income goes up, spending goes up, waste and useless spending go up much more, there are more government-funded mouths to feed permanently, and it becomes impossible to ever go back without a meltdown. It's bad at all levels, but maybe worse at local levels because the people in charge of spending the new money are usually not the brightest bulbs.

Wait... it may get worse. The Republican tax bill winding its way through Congress will make benefits given to employees from non-profits *taxable*. I doubt Triad will be willing to fund retiree medical much longer if this happens and they may also be very eager to pare back all benefits to existing LANL employees. You can tack this onto the much higher property taxes that Los Alamos County is probably considering to make up for the huge GRT shortfalls. The county has already started sending out their property evaluators across the town site to redo home property evaluations and drive them higher. Bend over and clench down hard because here it comes.

Corporate taxes may have gone way down but it looks to me that individual taxes are about to go up in many areas and employee benefits are about to be cut even further.

Los Alamos County never received ALL of the GRT. Most of it went to the surrounding counties and the state. If things return to the not-for-profit days, then there will be an expectation that the old fees that DOE paid the county through the lab will also return.

Fair enough and maybe this should be done, however this about 1/4 of what the town is getting now and that is unacceptable. Once they addict starts getting additional money beyond what they had they must keep it going, you simply cannot take it away and this is why the county officials are losing their minds right now.

If you know some happen to know some of them personally than you would know exactly why they are so worried. The problem is they over committed the the funding for years to come and the upkeep on all the new gigantic buildings costs a huge amount of money as well. The Taj-Mahal for example costs at least 10 times more in upkeep than the previous facilities due to its massive size, power usage, and loads and loads of extra staff that have been hired. They really thought that LANL was going to be for profit forever and many even thought Bechtel was going to stay.

It's an extra 82 cents per month. It goes to the utility department. Their budget is separate from the county budget.

8:11 fails to realize that the sewer rates just went up 30% a couple years ago to fund the White Rock sewer. Water is going up, property taxes going up to support UNMLA. Water rates went up awhile back and guess what, people started conserving. Now they are raising rates again. Not everyone in LA is making 100K +/year so its not "just 82 cents."

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
