True story of Walp and Doran

True story of Walp and Doran uncovering theft at Los Alamos aired on CBS last Friday. The show disproved the insane Walp and Dorn (sic) defender troll.

To be honest this is why the public no longer trusts the media, I encourage everyone to watch this piece since most interested parties know a bit about so you can get an idea how one sided
the modern media is.

It starts of the "Walp and Dorn investigation a massive theft ring" This is pure BS, it is not a fact and was proven to be bogus not to mention it puts nothing in context. They where not fired before they could finish their "investigation" they where fired going to the press before an
investigation could be completed.

The report is 3.4 minuets long yet most of it is not even relevant to the Walp or Dorn case, they go on about the disks behind the copier, this had nothing to do with them or their investigation whatsoever, not to mention the details of that actual case are not black and white at all since there was a valid reason for the tapes to be removed due to the fire.

Walp and Dorn are also dishonest in that they imply that they where deep in investigating nuclear weapons work at the lab, which they where not. There was no missing forklift, as for massive theft ring it is never put into context of the actually amount and comparison to other organizations of the Los Almaos size, if it was it would be clear that LANL is far lower.

Walp says his greatest fear was the classified information would "walk out the door of the labs"
but what they where "investigating" had absolutely nothing to to with classified work or was anywhere near that work. Again he is being dishonest.

They do ask Walp why they where fired, did he give an answer? I did not hear one. The reason was is they where going to the press with information, which is not only bad investigations but I think is illegal.

They go on about how they "risked" everything and lost their houses and could not pay bills.
I call BS on this, why should we believe a word. I also like the whole "hid stuff in a trap door" which just makes them look like criminals trying to hide something.

The only part that of this report that has some value is in the end where they say Walp and Dorn
found no evidence for espionage which is course true because that is not what they are investigating. As for the two employees in jail, from what I know Walp and Dorn where not in that case, so they never uncovered anything.

The whistle blower programs are vital and necessary however it can be abused and Walp and Dorn I prime examples of this. The fact is they got fired because they where incompetent and now they are trying to make a buck.

Again I urge you to watch this video, what is so telling about how you know they are dishonest is the constant push on nuclear weapons, safety of the world, the ability to kill hundred of thousands of people. This had nothing to do with their case, what they where investigating,
and what they found and they know it yet they push a false narrative to hype their agenda. That is dishonest and wrong.

I am not sure how a 3 and half minute story with mostly irrelevant information about Los Alamos
being the home of the atomic bomb could bring all the facts together for someone to figure out the true story of Walp and Dorn. More like a few random bits opion from from Walp and Dorn but whatever.

I do agree with you that the show does disprove the Wald and Dorn defender troll.

The following was what I was aware of during my tenure?

1. Employees could use their badges to buy an assortment of products from local vendors (radio shack, stationary store, safety clothes, etc.)
2. Employees were reporting Lab laptops stolen at various colleges their kids were attending.
3. We purchased more laptops than the number of employees on the rolls (i.e., extras were for the aforementioned college kids
4. We suddenly had a need for giant computer monitors which were actually flat screen tvs and they were purchased in large amounts.
5. We purchased more fancy office chairs than there were employees to use them.
6. Employees were able to have products shipped to their residences instead of the warehouse.
7. The warehouse surplus was a shoddy operation/ Unconfirmed hearsay was that surplus ended up on ebay. The surplus is now managed by a contractor.
8. Ask older coworkers who still work at the Lab about "Graceland". Graceland was a series of storage sheds where employees kept lots of extra parts supposedly to avoid dealing with procurement but hearsay was that this material ended up in employee homes.
9. Lab legend was that various employees stole enough supplies to wire their entire new homes under construction.
10. Contractors and project people were so cozy that procurement became a restricted area. I know when I worked in procurement I had various lab individuals trying to read confidential bid information from different vendors which were on my desk that I was working on. There was no reason for anyone else to have this information.
11. I knew of one lab employee whose husband was a contract employee who was on per diem for over a year while the lab employee had already purchased a home (presumably together). When I found out, the contractor was required to refund the overpaid per diem and I was ostracized for doing my job.

One thing that Doran and Walp were correct about was that it was emphasized that it was our job to protect the contract.

Oh, and also that Bussollini and Alexander almost got off scott free. Their punishment was a little slap on the wrist and they kept their pensions.

"they push a false narrative to hype their agenda"

Oh no, yet another unreported theft, this time from the LANL retaliation cookbook.

I am sure that some of what you say is correct, however the problem is to what extent where these events, where they really a "massive theft ring" as claimed or was it a very small percentage of the workforce. What are the percentages compared to other organizations of this side, particularly other government organization of this size. Every time some actual numbers are brought out on safety, security or abuses it has been found time and time again that LANL is far below that of other comparable organizations.
Most people at LANL are very uncomfortable with these kind of cheats and the idea that LANL is a den of thieves is simply bs
and Walp and Doran know this but still spout it off to promote their agenda and that is what makes them villains. Anyone who watches that news piece will instantly see how dishonest Walp and Doran frame the whole thing in terms of nuclear bombs, threats to security and so which had nothing to do with their work. By the way the forklift was not stolen the paper work was lost after it was retired this was known back in 2003, this same report had a claim of a water tower stolen when it was taken down years ago. I am no fan of the UC and always wanted LokMart in but to say the getting rid of these guys was all about keeping the contract is delusional, they got fired because of a huge amount of incompetence not to mention how they overstepped their bounds and where the worlds most arrogant jerks, there are still stories going on about these guys coming in with a chip on their shoulders, bad attitudes and way beyond their depth.

"Oh, and also that Bussollini and Alexander almost got off scott free."

I am not sure they got of scott free but I agree the sentences where way to light. I don't know much about Alexander but everyone really hated Bussollini and thinks he did a lot more than he was charged for. In any case what Walp and Doran
have little to do with their cases. Oddly enough the person that Bussollini is most similar to is Walp, they seem like they could be best buddies in real life in terms of the outlook on life. To them the lab is scam to make a buck off they just went at it a bit differently. Would anyone be really surprised if a joint Walp Bussollini book comes out soon? I would give it a 50% or more that something like this will happen.

The outright thefts and purchasing indiscretions at LANL in NM, were of a magnitude to prompt a significant increase in Technical Release Representatives (TRR) here at LLNL in CA. Prior to that period, ordering real programmatically needed items that were typically low dollar, was a straight forward and simple process. A few LANL folks helped LLNL add another purchasing layer.

If one looked at actual statistics you find that LLNL and LANL had the same amount of theft, LANL maybe even slightly less. What happened is that after WHL which was hyped up, the news media was going to go crazy about anything at LANL, it would never be put into context and analyzed in any serious way. Why, because the news media is lazy, once you had the first story about LANL you could just keep repeating the first story over and over again. Have any doubts why is that there anytime there is new story about LANL 2/3 of the report is just the same old stories, they have some picture of LANL from 1999 and picture of atomic bomb and an explosion. Remember wen NYT wrote a story about LANL yet a few months latter had to put in a retraction? No you don't remember a the reaction, no one does. The idea that LANL was a den of thieves was never true, what amount of crime makes a place a den of thieves. You could say an industrial standard, like 0.1 crimes per very 500 employees of something. If one does this and it has been done for LANL than you get much lower numbers, so there is no credible claim that LANL is den of thieves, but the media never gives you the context of what is going on. In the old days reporters did this, in fact reporting was considered a hard job of getting up at 4AM working the beat maybe writing something up at 10pm after 12-14 hours of work. Now a reporter gets up at 10 AM with a hangover, goes to the internet takes a story of the internet adds one or two extra sentences, by 1pm they are at the bar again, hanging with friends or tweeting, updating facebook posts. No actual journalism is ever done anymore and has not been done since 1990 or so. Don't believe me just find a issue of NYT from 1980 and compare it 2017, it is uttering shocking. Find some old news stories from Walter Conkrite or Ed Marrow and compare that to Don Lemon or Tucker Carlson.

In many ways LANL was one of the early victims of "fake news", I guess it has always been on the forefront. By the way I think a better term is "non-news", in other words you are just given a bit of recycled information. There could alot more information out there, or new information but the modern corporate media is simply to lazy to work on any of that. For many years the media could be lazy since they where the only game in town but now with youtube there are lots of new independent reporters who can put in real effort to do stories and the mainstream media is starting to feel the pressure. They could try to reform themselves or they could just try and get rid of all the little guys and guess what we are seeing now.

Walp and Duran were cops at heart, which was not what they were paid to do as security investigators. LA County has cops, and they didn't need Walp and Duran's help. I was there from Wlap's first day on the job until he was fired by Busboom and Tucker. He deserved it for his insubordination, his arrogance, and his blindness to his actual job responsibilities. He was ex-PA State Police Commissioner and was totally inappropriate as a hire for the job he was given, just one of Busboom's ad Tucker's mistakes.

Bussolini and Alexander were convicted of stealing over $200,000 worth of merchandise, hunting, and camping gear. Some items they purchased were given bogus names to make them seem legitimate. A big screen TV was called a “command center monitor,” a picnic table was a “workbench,” a barbecue rotisserie attachment was a “basket positioner” and a model airplane remote control was a “receiver.” This was the lax fiscal environment that existed during the tenure of Walp and Doran. Claim that Doran wasn't involved with this and you will be proven to be a liar. Doran's involvement was documented and published even before the two thieves pled guilty.

Alexander was sentenced to prison for a year. Bussolini got 6 months in prison and 6 months of house arrest. The crimes that they pled guilty to could have gotten them 20 years. They really did get off easy.

The Federal investigation found a total of $1.5 million in stolen or "lost" merchandise at LANL. Read "Fraud Confirmed at Los Alamos Laboratory", LA Times, Jan 31, 2003.

"Claim that Doran wasn't involved with this and you will be proven to be a liar. Doran's involvement was documented and published even before the two thieves pled guilty. "

Good we are making some progress in admitting that Walp had nothing to do this. I still contend that Dorans role rather small if you look at the case, so to claim Walp and Doran are the ones that brought down these guys is false. Alexander and Bussolini would have been
caught and charged without Doran and you dam well know it.

"The crimes that they pled guilty to could have gotten them 20 years. They really did get off easy."

Agreed, Alexander may have just been a yes man but most think Bussolini probably did way more than was every truly proven. Anyone who had to deal with this guy hated his guts and where not happy with sentence he received. He would be very charming to anyone higher up and just nasty to anyone else. I suspect some people just got sick of him and suspected something and tipped off a few security people. I also suspect that they did get lighter sentences due to the involvement of Doran and his inappropriate behavior that probably jeopardized the case, which is part of the reason they fired these guys.

"The Federal investigation found a total of $1.5 million in stolen or "lost" merchandise at LANL. Read "Fraud Confirmed at Los Alamos Laboratory", LA Times, Jan 31, 2003."

The key is lost versus stolen, much of this was lost, for example no one "stole" a water-tower, no one stole a non-functioning forklift that was scraped, and so on. The other issue is what time frame is 1.5 million over, is it like 10-15 years, how would this compare to a similar sized institute of 10k people for a similar time period, it turns out that is like 10 times lower. In fact the federal investigation even mentions that is much lower than average but the LA Times does not report that. It just takes the most sensational stuff, through that out without any context so the read has no idea what it actually means.

9:47 AM, After all these years of faking like you know what went on and you admit in your last paragraph that you really don't know anything. You obviously didn't read the NNSA report. The question is why?

Why don't you get the report, read it, learn how to write above the 3rd grade level, and then write us a book report.

What is so odd is that Walp and Dorn is that they never seem to go away, every few years they come back to sniff some more money from Los Alamos. Maybe they want to get some kind of movie deal, like a Spike-Lee docu-comedy, or they could team up with Bussolini to make book, or a Netflix film, "An unlikely combination of Cops and Criminals come to together to save America from LANL, and look into the unsolved Murders". Why not go all out and get UFOs in as well, at LANL they not only stole forklifts, and water-towers but large round objets! You laugh but I would bet anything that something like this is the next thing from these guys. At least Walp did not call himself Dr Walp, maybe he figured out that bragging you have a Phd from Walden University does lend much in the way of credibility.

What is so odd about you is you never seem to go away but keep returning with "Dorn" when the gentleman's name is "Doran." DORAN. Get it?

What is even odder is that you care so much about it ;)

I wouldn't care, but it is a much-repeated misstatement (not an error but intentional, after repeated corrections) which indicates the poster has an agenda. Or a grudge against Doran. Trolls should be called out.

Trolls should be called out? After years and years of spewing anti-LANL nonsense, anti-science vitrol, obsessive anti UC mania, pro Bechtel, pro Walp and Dorn propaganda, you have the nerve to call out trolls? Fine it cuts both ways you know. Indeed trolls should be called out, that we can agree on.

I am not "pro Walp and Dorn," I was there, in a management position during all of it and I heard everything that went on both pubic and private. I am pro-LANL and I am a scientist. I think Walp and DORAN were guilty as hell and deserved to be fired long before they were fired. I knew Walp personally but not DORAN. I simply object to the idiocy and stupidity of continuing to misspell a man's name out of some juvenile impulse that you can't seem to control. Grow up.

It is interesting that CBS should carry this story. They were successfully sued by one of the people that Walp and Doran wrongfully accused of theft. CBS fell for Walp and Doran’s lies before and paid heavily for it. Guess CBS wants to pretend to be vindicated. I didn’t see this video but if names other than the real guilty parties, Bussoloni and Alexander, were mentioned, I hope CBS has to pay again for their wrongful accusations. Better still would be Walp and Doran being successfully sued for their slanders and finally shamed the way they deserve.

Walp, even just after being hired by LANL, was a paranoid, autocratic "leader" who never understood he was no longer a cop with no boss, as when he was Commandant of the Pennsylvania State Police. Worst hire ever by Busboom and Tucker, and they paid the price.
