Livermore had a few barracks buildings (from the Navy days) still being occupied when I left in 2013. Any chance the Feds will throw a few bucks their way to replace them?

I was reading the comments on the news piece. This guy Erich Kuerschner is utterly clueless about the most basic concepts of economics. How do people get this far in life with such crazy notions? It is on flat earth level. I have no idea who this guy is but he is not exactly a PhD in economics.

The photo dates back to the late 1960s or early 1970s, as evidenced by the completed Scyllac building behind the main Ad building.

I like the argument that LANL creates Northern New Mexico poverty. How on earth does that work? I mean if you don't like nukes that is one thing but saying LANL and Sandia don't help the local economy is just out and out nuts.

“They’re treating millions like they’re jelly beans,” protester Erich Kuerschner said in Taos. “I mean one of these millions would do so much for Taos. What are they doing? Creating terror. I mean, it’s disgusting. It’s disgusting, to see so much going to waste.”

I could just take a crazy guess that if the lab gets 5 billion dollars that Taos county will benefit by many millions of dollars not just one million. But I could take a not so crazy guess Eric would rather that the lab have no money and hence Taos not get any of the money as well. You do know that in economics that math is kinda important, like for example |something| > 0, a concept understood by people people even before economics became a field.

Eric Kuershner has real problem with economics, I think he tried to be one at some point but maybe he could not understand supply and demand curves and told he needs to do something else. I guess he must hate the field now and tries to offend anyone who appreciates economics.

The Labs ARE extremely wasteful. The miscue is that somehow that is the fault of the scientific staff. Rather, the waste comes from the self-absorbed, life-long bureaucrats in Washington who believe that they know best how to deal with: waste, R&D, energy, policy, science education, space management and a long, long list of other areas where they have consistently failed at every level. Deregulation would be an excellent start. Ridding ourselves of the supposedly professional management class would make a huge difference too.

Not only are the labs wasteful by they cause poverty on the Moon. Look you can see the moon from New Mexico and there are no jobs on the moon, nothing productive is done on the moon because of economic inequality. Eric Kuershner has pointed out the economic link between the existence of LANL and poverty on the moon. In order to decrease poverty on the moon and New Hampshire they should burn money in Nova Scotia since money is like jelly beans this was understood even by Keynes as far back as 1934 but no later than 1935. It is disgusting but more than that it is confusing. Dr Kueshner....oops I mean Mr Kuersherner knows economics!!!! Free Taos and Free the Moon, by cutting funding for Los Alamos.

This blog would greatly benefit from much more of your wisdom. There are many here who will not at first understand your points, but with some explanatory effort and some repetition, that will change. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next installment!

Thank you very much. Very few people can understand the true intellectual wisdom of Erich Kuerschner. His idea of economics may differ from that every working economics or even accountant but that is because they simply do not appreciate his wit or knowledge.

Here is example of just how smart Erich is

" There is no documentation to support the rationale that LANL is the “economic engine” of northern New Mexico that is trotted out by our congressional representatives, our legislators, our state and county officials, ad nauseum. New Mexico sits at the 46-48th position of the 50 states in median income. (Erich Kuerschner)"

So the logic goes like this NM is like the bottom in the states for income so LANL has no economic benefit to the New Mexico.
Sounds good so a state is ranked 50th in terms of income where suppose on average people makes 20k a year. You remove the big company from the state and now everyone makes an average of 10k a year however the state remains at 50th in terms of income so there is no change in ranking so therefore nothing changed in the state by removing that company. That is Erichs logic.

Old Erich does not seem to understand bounds. Literally every economic argument he makes is like this. He has no understanding of cause and effect relations, bounds, distributions, correlations, geography or history.

Of course there is the possibility that the presence of LANL and New Mexicos economic conditions are not really related in any meaningful way. New Mexico has Roswell so one could say that Aliens are the reason for the poor economic conditions, after all there is no data to show that it is not connected.

You have apparently missed the farcical tone of the previous two posts, or perhaps you have an unsharpenable axe to grind.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
