Pension Status

Ironically, every year in April since 2009, LANS/TRIAD has published a perfunctory status of the Defined Benefit Pension. Given the hit on the market I do no expect good news. As a reminder, last April 2018 TRIAD published a 104% funding attainment. Prior to 2018, there has a been a 5% per year decline in value from 134%, in spite of bull markets. When the attainment is 80% or below TRIAD will "punt" the pension to the federal government (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation) and pay a portion or all benefits would we have received from the plan. It should be noted that this is huge difference between the UC pension and the private LANS/TRIAD pension. My understanding is that UC pension will stay with UC through "thick and thin". I will never forget Tyler conveying "substantially equivalent in the aggregate", we will soon see what "aggregate" means. Buckle up everyone; we've been living on borrowed time.

I should also mention that LANS/TRIAD is very secretive about how (and who) they manage this private pension. I've tried without success to determine the qualifications and credentials of the personnel that manage the pension, let alone specifically where the investments.

Thanks for your prediction. The next statement will refer to conditions a year ago, as always, so we’ll just see. PBGC usually gets involved when plans at much lower funding levels than 80 percent. Have you LANL folks been paying in seven percent of salary like LLNL?

LANL people have been paying 10%.

LANL people have trouble calculating percents, so who knows?

LANS (at LLNL) has the pension funded at 104%.

As of when?

As always Triad is saying nothing about the status. The University of California recently sent out a message (below) to all it's pension holders indicating the UC pension remains viable and strong:

https://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/2020/03/the-long-term-stability-of-the-uc-retirement-plan.html

On the other hand the LANS/Triad pension remains a secret, with no information being provided to its pensioners. Let's face it, this would be great time and excuse for Triad to unload this private pension on the U.S. government, it's perceived as a financial liability and risk for them.

For LLNS, the March 202 statement lists

“The Plan’s funding target attainment percentage decreased to 104.11% due to increasing plan liabilities. The liabilities are calculated using the interest rates as allowed under the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act, enacted in 2012. Without this legislation, the Plan’s funding target attainment percentages for 2018 and 2019 would have been 88.16% and 83.99%, respectively.”

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
