I found some great glassdoor ratings for Los Alamos If you like to mountain bike, road bike, hike, camp, ice skate, swim at 7200' elevation, rock climb, run, x-c or downhill ski, this is the place to be! Cons Racist, incompetent, sexist managers; pointless research opportunities that imprison one to work in nuclear bomb research one's entire career (get out asap or you'll never get another good research job at a decent university); lip service only to safety; endless red tape and 'training;' worst joband place to work I have ever experienced. Everyone I know who still works there is staying because of benefits and salary and are counting the days to retirement. Due to Q clearances, people don't get the psch help needed;lots of DV, drinking, stress, anxiety. Advice to Management Promote people to management who actually have skills to do the job; do not promote scientists who have written grants and secured tons of funding for reasearh to management positions.

I think that review is a bit dated but still.
Mostly on target. The NW mission remains a real and important one along with many others. Unfortunately both the caliber and capabilities of the personnel from top to bottom have degraded to the point where the place is literally run by paper tigers who have never accomplished anything in their entire lives. It is an incredibly wasteful and silly place.
I’ve seen the transformation of the lab from a place with top notch talent to what it is now. The first sign I saw was around 2000 when poseurs started showing up for high-level management positions. One of these was an undistinguished computer programmer from Rochester LLE who was placed as the head of A division. His only achievement was writing a one dimensional hydro code. He was put there by the NIF a people. He ultimately rose to head of the NNSA. Another was the astronaut couple who had no experience whatsoever in weapons. Apparently they wanted the female astronaut but had to take her husband who was known to be a moron. He ended up head of lasers and was widely ridiculed when his back was turned. As for regular employees, I know people who are washouts and failures who got nice cushy jobs at the labs. I know others who have taken positions as a last resort or for financial reasons.
