So, the “civilization-ending extinction level event that is anthropogenic climate change” is not urgent enough for these Democrats to have some dry casks standing on a few acres of desert..

Is it any wonder people think the left’s climate alarmism is all about political power, not science?

Think for a moment about the technical knowledge present (absent) in this conversation. None of those individuals could pass a basic, high-school physics exam. Yet they are determining the future of nuclear power in this country.

I say store it in San Francisco or New York. Would do more good than harm.

Perhaps not, but they are smart enough to see that this is a blatant attempt by states with nukes to dump their waste into our backyard. This is not the first time that DOE has tried to make New Mexico the national dump of everyone else's garbage, and probably not the last. I say store it in the basement of the Forrestal Building! Maybe that will get the DOE apparatchiks off their butts to find a permanent solution.

The stuff has to go somewhere. New Mexico makes a lot of sense, there is a low population density, some infrastructure and roads. Nevada would also work. The problem with Alaska, Wyoming, Montana is the accessibility, weather and so on. So it is pretty much New Mexico and Nevada are the only places.

California has the Mojave Desert, Colorado Desert, and the Great Basin Desert, each with rather low population densities, with some infrastructure and roads. Most Californians wouldn't want this stuff in their state either.

Any so called "solution" to climate change that does not have nuclear power as a core element is just performative virtue signaling sans actual solutions.

You have a point. I think the best solution would be to give these areas to Nevada. These are red areas anyway and real Californians hate people from Victorville, Death Valley and the Needles. They do not want these people but Nevada would be a happy to take these areas. Californians do do consider anything east of the mountains to be California so sounds like a win win.

Climate change politics is about changing society not climate, please keep up.

Subduction-zone deep-drilled dumps are the solution that will make it possible for nuclear power to replace fossil fuel in the distant future. That is, if we ever get to a distant future without annihilating each other with our nuclear weapons.

True, I think we should make the heroic moral decision to abandon nuclear weapons. We have so many problems in the US right now that last thing we need to worry about is also destroying the rest of the world. I know the old arguments that need to protect our nation from other nations with nuclear weapons. The irony is that this is not even our land, we stole, we have no moral authority over it. Let us close down the labs and use the money to replace fossil fuels, dismantle capitalism, fight fascists, and build a equitable world.

So when someone takes your home and your property you will be fine with that since it is not even yours and you have no moral authority over it right? Or is it just everyone else's property you are willing to give up?

Has it ever occurred to you that owning property is not the best thing and maybe why we are in the total mess we are in? As issues of global warming, equity and immigration become more relevant and these are are interconnected the ideas of someone owning property will have to be changed. Ironically people that now own homes and property are the same ones you created capitalism that has brought us close to environmental collapse. The idea of property never existed before Europeans showed up, the idea of conquest did not exist, the idea of slavery did not exist, the idea of get rich off your fellow man did not exist. Now look at us. It is time to rethink this property especially when it is not ours in the first place needs to be rethought.

Silly you. Personal property dates back to when the first neanderthal picked up a shiny rock and said "ugh, mine!"

Never studied history, huh? Slaves have existed since humanity has existed. You think willing workers built the pyramids? In the "cradle of democracy," Athens, slavery was how work got done to support the Senators. Such ignorance.

The right of property ownership is the only thing that separates democracy from tyranny. Get a clue.

I whatever drugs 6:23 is taking. Talk about a total escape from reality. Wow.

Getting rid of nuclear weapons is as realistic as getting rid of all weapons. The genie is out of the bottle and it's impossible that no country will ever seek that advantage. The only use of advocating for that pipe dream is to get a quickly Nobel prize for a speech. Moreover, nukes have made the greatest contribution to world peace of any invention or organization in history. They have done what the UN cannot. There is a reason WW 2 was the last world war. Charles Nobel finally accomplished his objective, and his name was Robert Oppenheimer.

On July 16, 1945, a desperate and reckless U.S. "Government" detonated the first Atomic Bomb at the blasphemously named "Trinity Site" New Mexico. According to one author, when "President" Truman asked the head of the Manhattan Project, the wicked J. Robert Oppenheimer for a worst-case scenario, Oppenheimer said his evil creation "might kill a few thousand Mexicans". Shamefully and arrogantly marginalizing the lives of numerous Hispano-Americans, Native-American, Basque-Americans and Anglo-Americans, all unsuspecting and never forewarned U.S. Citizens living in the towns surrounding "Trinity Site".

Thousands of innocent Men, Women and Children were issued a de facto death sentence due to the immeasurable levels of Radioactive fall-out. Imagine Chernobyl - times 100.

Your mastery of sarcasm on a nuclear weapon laboratory blog is unparalleled, well done! I'm sure you chuckled as you imagined all the smiles and laughs you would engender in all the thousands of hard-working scientists and engineers who labor on our nuclear weapon deterrent to keep our country safe. Congratulation on injecting some real humor into what is usually a very serious job!
