China Dominating Science.

https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/China-ties-the-US-as-the-most-influential-nation-in-science
TOKYO China now ranks as the most influential country in four of eight core scientific fields, matching the U.S., according to the Japan Science and Technology Agency.

It is clear the US if falling behind. The question is what doe it mean for the NNSA labs?

There’s a difference between quality and quantity. You’d really need to take into account the quality of the journal and the impact rating before getting too upset. In some areas China (or others) are probably leading - that’s to be expected. We have to pick and choose where to be dominant.

China is leaving us in the dust. We dominate in invented pronouns and faux rights.

"There’s a difference between quality and quantity."

Good point. At the NNSA labs both quality and quantity of publications have been going down for some time now.

Good grief, doesn't anyone understand per capita? With 1.4-B population you would expect 4 times as many publications as from the 330-M in the US. But, but, its only 25% greater! What's up China? Not educating your trodden masses? Can't get your trash published?

Good grief, doens't anyone know calculus or rate of change? The US published 30 times more than China 25 years ago and just now they have surpassed us. Where do you think they will be in 10 years time? Since math is obviously not your strength perhaps language is, you might want to learn Mandarin.

Sigh, another example of Middlebrow

demanding or involving only a moderate degree of intellectual application, typically as a result of not deviating from convention.

or Midwit

"those who possess above-average intelligence and trouble to occasionally read newspapers and magazines tend to genuinely be under the erroneous impression that they possess superlative intelligence."

It sad to see what is happened to the labs. In the old days you needed really smart people to figure things out. Now we need sort of above average people to maintain the brilliance of what others have done before them. The know a term like "per capita" but fail to understand context, nuance, how to extrapolate or synthase. Hypotheticals simply mean nothing to them. Generally they are smart enough to follow directions and perhaps that is all we need now.

Extrapolating based on two data? Better brush up on your own math skills.

OMG, there is a whole curve on this, did you not even try to look this up? Guess what that curve looks like? Think about it.

By the way are you the same guy who was posting that human population was growing exponentially about a year ago? I bet you are the same guy.

We have 500,000 Chinese students studying here, taking some of the best slots at top universities. Also we ended the China initiative that was directed against intellectual theft by China. We also ended an operation that arrested Chinese intelligence officers who were posing as students and post docs. Figure it out. This is what our leaders want.

"We have 500,000 Chinese students studying here, taking some of the best slots at top universities"

Excuse me but if you look at students in these top universities they are generally the top students, so how can they be taking up the slots for other students that are not nearly as good. Look at any top graduate program more than half are from China and India and they are always the top students.

THe rest of he question is: How many of the top Chinese and Indian students here stay here? And exactly how far would the ranking "top students" fall if the slots were reserved for US students? Without that info, the argument is futile.

About half stay, at least it use to be about half stayed. The ability to bring in foreign born talent has always been a strength to the US. Just look at the Manhattan project, and the space race, computer tech and so on.

Agree it is a net positive for the US, always has been, since the Germans and the Irish, and the Italians arrived in waves in NYC many decades ago. Our country has been enriched.

There is starting to be some panic at universities that Chinese students or postdocs will not be able to come to the US this fall.

It remains a fact that both China and India have more engineering students than the United States has engineers.

At first approximation, no one. Decline in US leadership will be sudden and immense. It's what isolationism and xenophobia gets you.

Grant money in the sciences basically creates a steady stream of cheap labor from third world countries, who are willing to work two postdocs for peanuts.

Most American or person for industrialized countries would not spend ten years earning peanuts. They drop out with a masters, run to engineering/tech/pharmaceuticals and make more than postdocs in a year. They aren't stuck working post docs, since they don't have visa problems.

Mechanical Engineer -> finish PhD (age 27-30) -> postdoc 1 (age 30- 33 ) -> postdoc 2 (33-36)->leave for industry 160k a year, leave for NNSA lab 120k year.

Econ -> finish BS (age 22) -> Wall Street (340k a year)

STEM -> finish BS (age 22) -> 160k a year at Tesla

You do the math and it is kind of obvious which way the wind is blowing.

What mechanical engineer needs two postdocs? Your econ number is vastly inflated, and your Tesla number is irrelevant.

Why are you worried about China or who is or is not going to graduate school.

Right now America is in grave danger, Fascists forces are weaponiizng free speech to spread misinformation and propaganda. We have just seen the results of what misinformation does with the rash of mass shooting in NY, CA and WI, all fueled by hate. Now Musk could usher in a age of mass misinformation which could lead to a huge increase in harm. The US was making steps by creating a agency to combat misinformation and this was just destroyed by merchants of misinformation. China is not the big threat its the growing Fascist state, that is using social media, Fox news, not so smart Billionaires and a rash of people who simply do not have the ability to make rational discussions.

Seek help. You are worse than the conspiricists on the right, who are pretty bad. The country is not where you are, or where the dingbat rightists are; it is in the middle and wants you juvenile crazies on both sides to go way, so the adults can get something done.

" The country is not where you are, or where the dingbat rightists are; it is in the middle and wants you juvenile crazies on both sides to go way, so the adults can get something done."

This is exactly why there is so much danger ahead of us. If you stay in the middle and do not realize that Fascism is rapidly growing it will be too late and it is time to pick a side. Adults realize that sometimes action needs to be taken. Right now it is Germany 1933, and you saying that the nation is in the middle, so do not worry but the end of democracy may come much faster than you think. Already Musk has revealed who he truly is and Bezos is starting to turn as well.

How can you say the country is in the "middle" when 80 million people think the election is stolen or where willing to essentially end democracy as we know it? That is not a definition of middle that is a definition of nation that is in deep trouble. Do you realize how close we came to having a dictator for life on Jan 6? Do you realize that a foreign power (Russia) put in their asset Trump in 2016. That is four years of having an imposter in the white house.

Seek help? How about getting help for the 80 million people who believe in Q-annon, the great reset, the election was stolen or that Antifa is some huge threat.

You know what happens to the people in the middle who do not take a side.

“THE VESTIBULE: This Is The First Part Of Hell That You Come Across In Dante’s Inferno. It Is Reserved For The Indecisive. The Souls Here In The Vestibule Were Called “Opportunists” Who In Life Were Only For Themselves, And Were Neither Good Nor Bad. It Was Also Where All Of The Angels [Were] Who Didn’t Take A Side During The War Against God. The Punishment For This Area Of Hell Is The Souls Have To Follow An Aimless Banner That Never Plants Itself. The Souls Are Also Chased And Stung By Hornets.

Don't panic 5/19/2022 9:50 PM, that's probably about the same percentage of the population that still believe that the world is flat, and/or that the sun "rises." The rest of us have managed to make do over the past 2 million years since the first hominids walked out of Africa, in spite of politics and religion. Don't panic.

5/21/2022 3:39 PM

Although I appreciate your platitudes one does not need to go back 2 million years to see how bad things can get . All one needs got to is go back 150 years, for the US Civil war, 80 years for WWIII, 30 years for a possible WWIII, 45 for the Cambodias killing fields and many others that show what can happen if you do not stamp down on misinformation and propaganda. If we do not get control for misinformation we will have nothing but death, racism, contested elections, and loss of freedom for women and not so smart billionaires allowing fascists a platform to spread lies. Your attitude is not goin work, the adults in the room need to take action now. Some steps are to shut down Fox news, Wall Street Journal, Alex Jones, fake news sites, blogs that spread lies, jail people that supported Jan 6, have real legal penalties for people saying the election was stolen, legal consequences for hate speech, legal consequences for supporting Russia, mandatory training in schools about what misinformation is and who is spreading it. We need real consequences like losing the right to vote and so on. This may be going to far but if it was proven that you did not support vaccines, masking or spread false information about Covid you should lose your rights to vote for 5-10 years you sure as heck should never be allowed have a firearm There of course should be exceptions for monitories or historically repressed groups since they have suffered enough.

Also we have to be realistic and understand that the danger is so grave that we will have limit some of the so called rights of the constitution for at least the time being until people grow up, obey the misinformation laws, or become informed.

Although it sounds dark you could also look at it in a positive light. This is now an opportunity to make America more equal, kind and
safer and have it move towards the rest of the civilized war. How is it that the US is so far behind Europe on all these issues.

This guy never quits. He is perpetually in an absolute panic about...something. Wants to give up rights for...something. Totalitarianism in return for...something. Basically take away rights from anyone you disagree with. Historically illiterate.
