Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it. Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!

With 2024 electrons there is no telling what is going to happen.
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/election-officials-prepare-for-a-range-of-threats-in-2024-from-hostile-countries-to-conspiracy-theorists
Foreign Threats. Internal threats, attacks on our freedom, attacks on our democracy. We have Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea who will
no doubt interfere with the 2024 electrons to get what they want. We have 80 million people in the US who do not believe in democracy but will believe in every crazy conspiracy theory. Yes 2024 will be crazy, we better prepare.
Yes we are not perfect, we have some chronic problems, but can we agree to address the potentially acute ones too?

Scooby, this is likely a Russian troll attack. Expect more of this kind of thing.
I have a very bad feeling about 2024. Trump is now barred from running in Maine.
Taibbi has a nice summary
"This year the public is being forced to research questions in which they have no say. We all understand now that there’s a disqualification clause in the 14th Amendment. We also understand that this clause seems to have been written with deliberate vagueness. I’m no lawyer, but I doubt the 14th Amendment was designed to empower unelected state officials to unilaterally strike major party frontrunners from the presidential ballot.
If it was, that’s a shock. I must have missed that in AP Insane Legal Loopholes class.
Is there any way this ends well? It feels harder and harder to imagine."
The reason I think things are looking so bad is that I do not know anyone who actually believes the Colorado and Maine rulings are even remotely legit, however half the people I know are totally fine with it since it gets rid of Trump, who cares about law. We are now in third world territory, where no one even cares about the rule of law, democracy or order. The only thing that matters is winning. Sure you can say 1/3 of Americans believe in conspiracy theories but 1/3 or more just believe in destroying the enemy at all costs. I don't see how we are getting out of this.

There have been cases as you know, where this leads to pilots attempting to crash a passenger aircraft, sometimes successfully. It could also lead to pilot error leading to an accident of course, to the degree by which untreated medical conditions impact performance.
The rise in near-collisions following the pandemic, of course, could be partly related to this, I think shortages of pilots and air traffic controllers are an issues as well, and this might also be something that adversely affects mental health too:
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/whats-behind-the-alarming-rise-in-near-collisions-of-commercial-airplanes
In terms of a repeat of September 11th, of course, many office buildings are largely unoccupied, but that is not true for class A buildings in general, such as the rebuilt freedom tower.
There was also a case where ground crew stole a plane too, crashing it in a suicidal joy ride:
https://time.com/5364913/richard-russel-seattle-horizon-air-stolen-plane/
And of course, there are incidents where disgruntled maintenance workers have sabotaged planes, as you know:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/06/us/american-airlines-mechanic-sabotage.html#:~:text=An%20American%20Airlines%20mechanic%20based,before%20takeoff%2C%20the%20authorities%20said.
“We are now in third world territory, where no one even cares about the rule of law, democracy or order. The only thing that matters is winning. Sure you can say 1/3 of Americans believe in conspiracy theories but 1/3 or more just believe in destroying the enemy at all costs. I don't see how we are getting out of this.”
Hopefully the Supreme Court will throw out these politically driven capricious lower court rulings.
Recent inflation figures although slowing, isn’t bringing prices back down, prices are just rising at a slower rate, and our working and retired incomes in terms of buying power, have taken a significant hair cut.

I hope you are right.
What gets me is that I cannot find anyone who actually believes the insurrection narrative. They parrot it is off but they themselves do not buy it. The Trump people at least believe the election was actually stolen, of course there is no clear evidence for that and you can argue with them and they listen and argue back. Some even say well the election was unfair, but unfair is not the same as stolen. Elections are often unfair to one side or another, for whatever reason. Maybe it is wishful thinking but if you provide enough evidence they may change their mind. I have seen people go from "stolen" to "utterly unfair".
The left wing people on the other hand do not believe the Trump insurrection story at all, as I said I never meet one who really believes it. They just sort of say, well whatever it takes to get rid of Trump is fine by me. In this case evidence has nothing to do with anything, it is simply good versus evil. These court cases in Colorado and Maine are beyond absurd and even even the hard core left wing lawyers say this is crazy stuff. Sure you can get one two guys who want to be on TV to say it is legit but just from watching them it is beyond clear they also do not believe it and just want be on TV. People have talked about the post-truth era from some time but I think we are starting to actually get there. People just do not care about the truth, or say it does not matter. Just to give you an idea of where we stand, I have never heard a right leaning person say we should ban people from voting. On other hand have heard many of my left leaning friends out and out say that we should stop "low IQ" " religious nuts", "gun owners" and "mentally ill" from voting, with mentally ill being defined as people who watch Fox news. As for the labs I have heard people say "we need to start yanking clearances"
Trump is a threat who should not be allowed to run, if he does runs than people who vote for him should not be allowed to vote. This is high IQ versus low IQ, educated versus non-educated, good versus evil, right and wrong, are you one the wrong side of history or the right side of history, so we have to do what we have to do to win.

Of course, last year there was a related controversy about the TSA practice of using deportation notices as a valid form of ID, as the article also mentions.

It looks as if it triggered an episode of psychosis, in which his judgement was profoundly impaired. As you know in some parts of the country these have been "legalized" despite being illegal under Federal law, this is one of the issues with it of course, that it can lead to suicide and/or murder attempts as in this case.

“And the Biden administration, an aggressive promoter of often mandatory vaccination last time, now is offering little public comment on the connection between disease and the porous borders with which its immigration policy has become widely identified.”
One can’t willfully allow millions of illegal border crossings to occur if impeded by first vetting all illegals and making sure there weren’t carrying infectious diseases…
USA needed skill set criteria would be yet another bottleneck to these willfully permitted illegal border crossings.
This magnitude of unabated illegal border crossings is concerning on a number of fronts.

In some ways, we are already having a worse event, i.e. the fentanyl crisis being one such example, it has been ongoing for many years.
This is causing fewer working age men to be employed or employable, in particular, one of the factors driving inflation, and a greater need for government services. Also of course, the direct impact on addicts and their family members, and related issues of crime and homelessness.

On the bright side of course, this drives automation and a high-tech economy, as the article mentions, as labor costs rise.

There was also an effort by a Chinese company to commercialize a modified adenovirus to target cancer cells around 15 years ago. It was promising but if I recall correctly, there were significant side effects in the clinical trial including in some cases death, for example caused by the immune reaction to the virus or the necrotic tumor tissue etc.

In any case I do not see a very large public health treat from immigrants, most of whom are healthier than our native population since they were able to make the difficult trip.

Evidently the pilot who attempted to crash the plane was suffering from such an episode, since the normal period of intoxication is only a few hours.

Of course, there are free and charitable clinics, and you can donate to support them, I believe it is a worthy cause:
https://nafcclinics.org/
So your approved of grand plan is to allow any and all illegal immigrants into the USA using the 68 billion dollar deficit CA as a sound reference? What does the word “illegal” mean to you? Be honest.
Other countries have more or less figured this out, I believe. Our health care system seems to be not designed for this, as insurance plans sometimes have large deductibles and co-pays for basic care, but offer relatively unlimited treatment once those are met.
This could be a system as you might expect, that encourages people to avoid medical care until problems become very serious, adding a great deal of cost, and leading to bad treatment outcomes for many people.
Supporting a free or charitable clinic system, I would think, could help address this problem which also affects US citizens in many cases.

Let me drop some facts on you.
(1) The border is not open that is a myth.
(2) We are a nation of migrants, all of us, why should you get to immigrate but not others.
(3) These immigrants will make the nation better. Their politics leans against insurrections, guns and hatred.
(4) We have plenty of room in the US, ever fly over New Mexico?
(5) Letting the people in is the moral things to do. Most of these people are asylum seekers from
nations that the US destroyed in their appetites for drugs, or capitalism. Much of South American and Africa are mess due to the
Western Colonialism and US interventions. We owe these people.
(6) We live on stolen land, it was never ours in the first place, we simply cannot say "this is our land so on one but who we decide can come here". At the very least we can share it with others.
(7) The biggest issue is simply the ethics. We are a wealthy nation with way too much money, we exploit the environment, start wars, steal money from other nations. It is simply fair and just that we give back to the world to improve the lives of more people rather than improving the lives a smaller number of people. The amount of good we will do by more immigration will far outlay the small loss of "quality" of life. You need to start using less, spending less, polluting less, building less, consuming less in order to improve the lives of others and save the planet.
(8) There are NO ILLEGAL human beings. There are however illegal acts like insurrections, and spreading heat over social media. On a personal note the migrants will improve the the nation since they will help dilute the fraction of crazies in the US.

Your honesty is admirable, not joking, but I respectfully disagree. You don’t try to hide your beliefs, you communicate them. Thank you.

The racist idea of the great replacement theory is a conspiracy talking point. The demographics of the nation have always been changing and will continue to change and yes the demographic change is going to change the political landscape and policies of the United States just as they have always done. Some groups are afraid because they will lose power as their voices fade. Personally I think this is a good thing as we can progress the United States to a more rational nation in line with what we have in Europe. It is not a replacement it is just a transition and it will be a better place for all people on average rather than select groups or demographics.
If you want honesty I will give it too you, I hope the change in demographics leads to gun controll, better health care, a better climate approach, cheaper housing, less police abuse, a shift away from greed, less fascists tendencies, less mindless capitalism and hopefully stronger laws against hate speech and misinformation. Also on a pure ethics framework a more fair, equitable, and diverse nation is going to be a big improvement. Sure maybe the tax rate will go up for the wealthy, maybe you will lose your right to carry you military style gun in the streets, maybe you will have to learn to live with equal rights for all and how to coexist with other view points, and maybe you will lose the ability to spread hate, insurrection and lies on social media. You can spin this how you like but rational people only see the upside. Change is hard but it is coming. The United States has always been changing anyway. You can be on right side of history or the wrong side.

Also, his wife has given an interview claiming they had a mortgage and could have lost their home if he had tried to access mental health care. And as you know, pilot training is often funded by student loans as well. The airlines were in a sense responsible, as they knowingly hired someone subject to this form of economic duress.
In fact, communists movements are well-known for self-criticism, in the Soviet Union many self-critics were placed in Gulags, prisons, psychiatric hospitals, or executed, one of Marx's famous statements was that the only antidote for mental suffering was physical suffering. I would assume that complainers like the 7:13 poster would be good candidates for such a helpful treatment.
Marx also made some lesser known statements praising economic growth and investment:
Capital is money, capital is commodities. By virtue of it being value, it has acquired the occult ability to add value to itself. It brings forth living offspring, or, at the least, lays golden eggs.

I have actually read Marx, his early days stuff is just silly, even he realized this and started to become more sophosticated. The problem with his work is that he provides do evidence that it can work. His propositions on economics have no mathematics to back them up, they sound kind of good over the dinner and most appealing they sound fair but they are have no real model to back them up. Marx never seriously address the other possibles or counter arguments. In fact you could argue that his initial premises are wrong which invalidates the whole argument. Of course history has shown just how far off he was.
I find it odd that so many people, especially young people read Das Kapital and his other works, and go "this is great". Yet at the same time seem to be unaware of history which points out the all the social instabilities that show why this does not work, or they simply cannot read it and think, "well maybe this would be issues, how does he know this to be true and so on". The just read and believe.
This is probably due to the premises like "man is good", "once a man has all his needs filled he will no longer be greedy and want more" are simply wrong. Not to mention the problem with fraction of people who do not want to go along with it. In capitalists societies diversity of thought can naturally coexists which promotes stability, in communism, it is has to be very narrow, which promotes instability.

It also contained statements such as this, which would forbid any DEI or exclusivity programs, in the context of the US this would be of course, more associated with right-wing ideology and opposition to DEI:
Any direct or indirect limitation of the rights of
citizens or establishment of direct or indirect privileges on grounds of race or nationality, and any
advocacy of racial or national exclusiveness, hostility
or contempt, are punishable by law.
Whether this was adhered to is of course, arguable since they did not have rule of law in general, but it is notable that ethnic conflicts have grown in the former Soviet Union including arguably Ukraine (or Chechnya within Russia itself, for example) following the demise of the repressive Soviet system. The same has of course, happened in other states such as Yugoslavia or Iraq, Syria, and so on for analogous reasons, once the centre of power became weakened or destroyed.
