Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation's Security Council, has threatened the United States and Europe with nuclear war if Russia is returned to its recognised borders from 1991.

Well I guess Nanos was right the nation does not need LANL or LLNL. Do you think anyone at DOE thinks that the whole "let privatize" the labs because after all, nuclear weapons are simply going to be irrelevant from here on out so it does not matter if the labs are run well or not.

My hypothesis has been that China, Russia and maybe even NK or Iran, had been following
and listening very carefully about just how badly we treated the labs from 1999 to 2014 and thought to themselves, "maybe American is compromised now, so lets go for it!". When you have politicians after politician, heads for DOE, heads of labs trashing the complex for this many years, someone has to be noticing.

No question Nanos and the DOE zeal to privatize did irreparable damage to Los Alamos. We will pay the price for decades if we survive that long.

People like to believe that the government has some master plan to destroy this or ruin that, but the truth is, they don't need a master plan. Their incompetence is fully capable without any evil genius behind it. Since the end of the Cold War, DOE has functioned like a monopoly with no motivation or competition. In this way, they are like the DMV. Getting any work done in budget or on time simply isn't necessary, in their minds, in a post-Cold War era. They have viewed the labs like a vestigial organ--you wouldn't cut it out for no reason, but it's not something you worry about either. I think we returned to great power competition within the past few years, but old habits die hard. I doubt the mentality will really change until Russia takes a NATO country or China takes Taiwan.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
