There are some interesting materials issues related to gamma and neutron irradiation of the superconductor, these can be shielded to some degree of course, it is not completely understood how large accumulated doses affect properties such as the critical current, field, or temperature in an adverse manner. My understanding is that quite a bit of research is being done on this.
