There is starting to be some pushback with saying AI is like the next Manhattan project. The Manhattan project had a very clear goal, while AI has many diffuse goals, and one of those is to make money. Since money is big motive it is not clear that the government can really do better or compete with industry. The atomic bomb was not a money maker. I get the idea of government funding things that nation needs that private business cannot do or will not do. I even understand some augmentation but AI is really driven by profit at this point. I would understand if LANL wanted to do something very different with AI or even make new kind of AI that might be useful for certain science but the LANL managers just want ChatGPT since they themselves use it to write memos and think that means it can do everything.
A more cynical view is that management knows AI at LANL is just pure hype to get money and not about having any actual impact on the mission. Perhaps they are right. Sure LANL may use AI just like every one else uses it to some extent but LANL is not going to be a leading "AI" lab. The other odd thing is they want AI to make the lab more "efficient" but no one really believes that a goal of LANL is to be "more efficient". The goal for some time has been about getting more money.
A somewhat ironic statement considering the theme of this blog. The for profit nuke business has minted plenty of fat profits for top executives and managing contractors.
That said, I agree with your conclusion, for the most part. Silicon Valley is doing just fine on their own. It would make more sense to have Musk build the Terminator army than for the labs to do it. We can't even patch a leaky roof or get a file server to work properly. The only thing we seem to do really well anymore is employ literally thousands of worthless paper pushers and regulatory compliance people.
