What's going on?

Things are going sideways at Los Alamos. Any news at LLNL?

Blog moderator's note:

I tried getting details from the poster but he hasn't responded. If anyone else can give more detail, it's appreciated 👍.

This would be interesting to hear, I’ve applied to both LLNL and LANL many months ago and suddenly both labs called me for interviews in the past 2 weeks. Maybe I should go the LLNL route with this tidbit.

According to the Big D, everything is going great at LANL. Well, that may be the view from the 7th floor of the NSSB, at least.

Rumors are of big cuts to science funding. Mason said that the overall lab budget is stable or even going up but that funding for science is going down. Lots of rumors that the cuts could be 30% in the science section and implications that the staffing is going to have decrease as much. Anybody have any idea of this number or how this could come about. I read the BBB section on the NNSA and it was hard to figure out what exactly it is saying.

However not to be too conspiratorial but did Project 2025 say anything about the DOE/NNSA labs?

Project 2025 clearly vilifies science and education!

I thought NNSA is getting a 24% increase in the new budget.

The budget may well be going up at LANL so it is not surprising that more people are getting hired. It all depends on the job you are doing. The issue is that certain portion of the budget are going up and certain portions are going down some managers are now saying that it is clear that just moving people around is not feasible in all cases so things are going to get rough. All I know is that someone pointed out that the Director said that the science portion of the lab is going down but gave go details.

Yes, it says that NNSA labs should only do nukes. No science or even DOD technology development, for that matter.

Rumors are that publishing scientific work and doing science just got much harder at LANL.

Bye bye National Labs! The MAGA administration is implementing the oligarchs 's project 2025 agenda which we know is anti-science.
Our only hope against complete destruction is for Democrats to regain the majorities in Congress next year. Otherwise, the labs will be a shell of a lab.

Yeah, the Department of Education should handle education. Wait. What?

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
