Labs furloughs

Heard that lab furloughs will be on the way if the shutdown lasts much longer.

The question is really how long the shutdown will last. Lost of rumors
(1) Until next Monday after the no Kings rally.
(2) Until, Nov 1st because some other things kick in
(3) Until Thanksgiving when people cannot fly and demand something.
(4) Until Christmas (See 3)

I have no idea but we did 35 days before so we still have some time. I am betting for 30-35 days again.

Somehow the lab just seems much more nervous about this one.

I predict once it gets into November, Republicans will abandon the filibuster and change Senate rules, then pass the CR on a party line vote. This filibuster business just doesn't work anymore for the country. Things are too evenly divided.

At LANL, I'm getting mixed information about how long the lab can stay open. Apparently the director said today that we have money until early November, but it's a fluid situation because the lab has $3B in the bank, but of the wrong color. They are trying to get permission from NNSA to use some of that for operations. I think it's also hard to calculate exactly when they need to shutdown because it depends on how much they need to preserve for security and other essential operations. I have a feeling we will get a lab wide email at 2:37 pm on a Tuesday, "Attention everybody! We just ran out of money! Lock your doors, turn off your experiments, put your pits in a box, switch off the lights and leave immediately."

Maybe this is the plan all along by the Dems? I am not sure I really have a hard time figuring what the goal of all this is.

Just a random guess by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about. Like all of us. With the judge temporarily blocking the firing of workers today the individuals making the decisions will keep it closed until the order is lifted or the Supreme Court rules the judge is wrong and he can, in fact, fire the workers and bring in the AI replacements. Or not. However it works out the probability of it being solved in the next few days is rather low.

Similar story at Sandia - "fluid situation, wrong color of money, probably can stay open until November 7th, etc. etc.". However, there are already direct-funded projects that are running on empty, so there is talk about having those folks charge overhead, or training, or move to some other project. There are also rumors of a patchwork furlough of staff going out in phases as their money runs out. Definitely interesting times.

Very well could be. Then after the midterms, they can pass another free money glitch bill in the trillions. Better invest in TIPS now.

The web is filled with conspiracies.
(1) This is a distraction from the Epstein files. (Whatever)
(2) The government will open for 3 days in November and close again. (How do they do this)
(3) The Dems just need to hold on a couple of more weeks to feel good about themselves.
(4) Once troops are not paid or it gets serious and Republicans back down in a couple of weeks.
(5) Some crazy stuff happens that we cannot predict.

I go with the shutdown will go a couple or more weeks,
with some compromise.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

Rumor corner

LLNS may have excluded the wrong people in last VSSOP? The exclusions were based on outdated job categories and related skills. ULM are now thinking that in the future, job categories and functional areas will have to be re-defined. The next VSSOP/ISP will be based on the new categories and functional areas. The questions I have are: 1) Why didnt they think of that before the transition. It seems like their style is “change things as you go”. Planning is out the window! 2) Who will give input on the new changes? The next RIF apparently is going to be more lucrative than the VSSOP. Depending on the length of employment, a RIFed person, not only gets their 1 week pay per year of service but also from 30 to 120 days notice, essentially 30 to 120 days pay.
