These are an important part of grid reliability -- they can continue running or be brought online in a crisis situation since the coal can be, and is, physically stockpiled near the plant.
How fast can a coal or fission plant be brought online? Are they kept idling and synced in case they are needed? For fusion how fast does the frequency drift if the device is running on heat storage in pulsed mode? We probably need the coal because we are backing off renewables. Without reprocessing and breeding fission has no future and they know it. Some of the private fusion companies are already backing off or changing direction, dropping continuous operation.
We need the coal plants to power Ai.
