Earlier today, Director George Miller issued a statement to employees regarding the workforce restructuring process.
The following is his message:
Today we will begin the next step in the workforce restructuring process that will result in the notification and release of flexible term and supplemental labor employees. Dedicated people who have contributed to this institution will be leaving. I want to personally thank them all for their contributions and wish them well in their future endeavors – we will truly miss them.
These changes, while particularly difficult, are part of the steps we are taking to position the Laboratory for the future and ensure our continuing ability to contribute to the solution of the country’s and the world’s most challenging problems. I will be holding an all-hands meeting on Jan. 17 to further discuss my vision of the future, the strategies that will help us accomplish that vision and my perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing the Laboratory in the coming year. In addition, I will discuss the allocation of the federal budget to the Department of Energy’s individual sites and my decisions on further workforce restructuring and the compensation increase program.

This BLOG is for LLNL present and past employees, friends of LLNL and anyone impacted by the privatization of the Lab to express their opinions and expose the waste, wrongdoing and any kind of injustice against employees and taxpayers by LLNS/DOE/NNSA.

I'm going to bet on the fact that it will be more bad news.
George: We couldn't get enough term employees to leave so now we have to up the quantity of FTE's that will be let go in April. We're 100 term employees short from meeting our goal.
I'm sorry I have to put you through this but the budget is tighter than we thought, so we need deeper cuts across the board, except management.

Well we might get some sort of preview when we hear what Anastasio tells the troops down at LANL.
Anyone else find it disturbing that we never saw the 3161 comments? Guess we'll only get the results next Thursday when they reveal the site-specific plan.
My bet is George is going to keep the raise package for LLNS and announce a SSP needing about 400 volunteers.

I haven't noticed anyone giving the terms a choice in the matter.
Remember: terms and SLO's address this year's budget, whereas savings from releasing career employees don't really show up until next year because of the severance pay.
The hard question is what does FY09's budget look like?

I suspect that we will see unannouced RIF's for the next two years as happened in Berkeley. After two years things will start to stablilize but they will never be the same and the fear factor of not having a job tomorrow will always be there. It's a dog eat dog world. Welcome to privitization and the wool they pulled over the tax payers eyes.
Am I missing something? Where is the promise to post the comments?
Section II. A. “Stakeholder Input” of the draft says they’ll post the draft for 7 a day comment period, analyze the comments, change the draft in light of comments, IF APPROVED, submit the final plan to DOE & NSSA, transmit the approved plan to Congress, distribute the approved Plan and post it on the LSO Site Office website.
Section II. C. 2. “Communications” only says they’ll tell the employees before releasing any info to the media.
I’d love to see the comments but I can’t find a promise to post them? I don’t think we’ll ever see them.
How many employees can withstand 2 years of fear factor?
I propose that instead, we run for another 8 months, then shut the place down. If congress wants it back up and running, they can fix the mess at that time.
Sometimes it takes a full crisis before people act accordingly.
Hundreds are being sent out the gate and only 14 people took the poll. I hope those that got booted will come back and voice their opinions in many ways. There's always _April 1st_ of every year at the gates. This time maybe you'll join in with your own agenda. I'll be there soon too. Join POGO and point out where the money is being waste on layers of upper level managment is also an option. I've already made contact and point out this fact.
