The Livermore Independent has an interesting article

These layoffs/return of workers will occur early March and the funding is nowhere to be seen. You'll see some additional strain on the lab as they try to find work for people who have left the environmental restoration program.
The concern is there could be layoffs and the team that has been put together will be broken-up. “The technical staff at the Lab is quite a competent team. I’d hate to see it broken up because of a funding glitch,” she added.
To date, no workers have been laid off. If the funding were not available, the Lab would return
them to their home programs, according to Bellardo. He said it would be up to the Lab to determine the disposition of the workers, whether they would be laid off or not.

It's no longer the LAB, it's just like any other place in the real world. When sales are going down, there is no need for salesmen. LLNL is in that boat. The mission is over and now there's no need for those people. In there mine as any other CEO, they owe you nothing. They paid you to do a job and you did it well. Now there's no jobs to do here, so find one outside the gates; if you can.
It's amazing how many people around here have a very distorted view of corporate America. Successful companies do not operate in this manner. It is true that layoffs happen and that the concept of employment for life has largely gone out the window. On the other hand though successful companies realize that pissed off workers aren't very productive and unproductive workers are very bad for the bottom line. It takes a lot of talent and hard work to be competitive in the modern corporate world. You don't get that kind of talent and dedication easily and competition is fierce for the best people. Which is one reason DOE/NNSA/Congress should be very worried right now. They had a rare good thing and have managed to cause serious and possibly irreversible damage. As an American I'm VERY unhappy with that.
The lack of experience in the private sector by many of the posters here is glaringly obvious. Almost as glaringly obvious as the complete lack of clue in DOE/NNSA/Congress.
They don't care buddy. You are just a # on a computer print-out, at will and can be shown the door in a microsecond for any reason. Get use to it and love it, or leave.
Why is a NNSA hack speaking for the Lab and LLNS?
Get a clue. NNSA has announced they are eager to cut the contractor workforce by about 30%. They could care less about morale in the weapons complex. They want you to leave your job. It will only make executing their plans a lot easier.
Then somebody needs to think seriously about charging them with treason.
I don't suppose it will happen of course but the increased threat to this country is very very real.
