Suggested poll... Look for it in this page.

Money is tight and NIF is EBAing people, assigning them new jobs and working those that are left twice as hard. I think it’s time for NNSA to step in and do what is right. I think it’s time to run a poll with multiple choices. The question would be something like. What incentive if offered by NNSA would most likely guarantee your departure before Oct 1st, 2013? If possible allow them to identify themselves by age. 1) One weeks pay for every year of service 2) Two weeks pay for every year of servive 3) Seperation check equal to two years wages 4) One years wages tax free into your 401k or 403b

You know this kind of open-ended question is just going to generate dozens of stupid/ignorant/nasty/slimy/inflammatory posts in reply. Why bother? What is your agenda? Why not actually put some thought into it and come up with a good proposal to debate?

Look, give up the "I want a VSIP" rant. It's pathetic. It ain't gonna happen.

Weren't you paying attention back around '09 when the lab changed the layoff policy such that the payout for a RIF went down? The RIF policy now costs the Lab less than any of the historical VSIPs would.

They would be stupid to pay more for a VSIP (that is out of management control and strips out smart older employees) when they can RIF deadwood instead.

Let. It. Go.

The point of the VSIP would be to let go ALL the smart older employees, that's what they want it. Fresh blood, new ideas, 50% cheaper. I say get-r-done. I know many of a smart old employee who if they offered a VSIP will be gone I a flash and I mean fast, especially if it's two weeks pay for every year of service.

Lose the "smart old employees", lose the capability. No one who has never designed, executed, or analyzed a nuclear test should be allowed to work on nuclear weapons. Too risky for the country.sraearl

You are laboring under the illusion that Lab management cares.

You are laboring under the illusion that management indifference justifies indifference on the part of the people who actually protect our national security - the employees who do the work. What, you didn't know you actually had some responsibility for that??

Layoffs are ongoing, and being managed at a rate to stay below the WARN act threshold. If we ever have to cross that threshold, a VSIP makes sense. The terms of the VSIP would be the same as for (involuntary) RIF. It just allows people to volunteer to be laid off. It'll look good, and cost the same as RIFs. Why not?

Why not?

Because it would be absolutely stupid from a management standpoint. RIFs clean out the people you don't want. VSIPs clean out the people you do want.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
