When is Monya leaving?

When is Monya Lane leaving? It was published she was leaving last June, but no date given and she is still here. I understand not having interim director Brett Knapp having to decide this but couldn't someone in Engineering who will probably remain with LLNL do a better job than Monya as a lame duck? Plus LLNL would save an AD salary!

Very common, most likely she was KGB. No biggy, beware of your surroundings at all times and who you associate with.

I think engineering went down hill after Steve Patterson left.

They went down hill after Ron Carr left, for those who remember him.

Like every organization, Eng has had it's ups and downs over the years.

Good ones included Steve Patterson, Ron Carr, Jens Mahler, and Jeff Williams.

On the bad side, remember Spiros Dimolitsas?

And everybody who was around at the time will have their own strong opinions (plus or minus) about Tony Chargin.

Engineering AD used to be an important position, that maintained and advanced the backbone of the Lab. I think this changed during Steve Patterson's tenure, and this was the reason he left. Since then, it's been hard to get heavy-hitters interested in taking the job.

Hold on grammar police! I meant "its", not "it's"

LLNS is confronted with the same problem as they search for a new LLNL Director.

You guys at LLNL have it good with Monya Lane. We have Steve Girrens (AD for Engineering) at LANL. Girrens is a "do nothing" Engineering AD who left LANL to work in industry only to return to LANL with his "tail between his legs".

Today what is the assignment really? What caliber of talent is needed for this assignment in its current form?

You don't need talent for this job. All you have to be is a yes-man or yes-woman for NIF. You cannot push an agenda that benefits the lab, if it does not benefit NIF first and foremost. If you have integrity or a backbone, you need not bother applying. In fact I wonder why Ed and Parney didn't disassemble engineering and just move parts into NIF, WCI or PLS and just lay off the rest. As you know, WCI, engineering and PLS are thought of as parasites when it comes to the NIF programs and the program and WFO funding coming into the lab.

Unfortunately you have accurately summarized the situation. It is a rubber stamp and photo op position.

How NIF was able to suck away funds from other programs for so long is ridiculous and they still failed to deliver. It reminds me of the gambler asking the house for a credit extension because the next arm pull will certainly be a winner. Except at LLNS the credit extension actually comes out of the pocket of the other casino players.

An interesting analogy. Any gambler with the history of NIF would have had both kneecaps broken long ago. Just shows that NNSA officials would never make it as casino operators in the big time.

Jeff and I worked on a very unique prototype NOVA harmonic converter together ! Great experience, good guy !

Thanks Jeff !

Actually, the Laser Engineering and Physics side of NIF delivered the goods ! LLNL can be proud of that.

Amazing what billions and billions of dollars will build, but no ignition.

"LLNL can be proud of that"

Those protected by Uncle Ed, have not directly experienced the programmatic funding subsidies on the backs of other LLNL programs, or force in and purge out staffing practices. When completed, I'm sure the transcontinental railroad beneficiaries were proud too. What's this talk of Chinese immigrant abuse? We are trying to have a celebration here.

Who wants this assignment in its current form? What LLNS mission influence has this post had in years?
Maybe Steve Patterson read the tea leaves correctly and decided to leave with his integrity intact.

Are there no takers for Monya's position? If so, why?

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
