Omar Hurricane

How long are they stay on this Omar Hurricane BS? So he put 3 months of work in to go from 0.1% of predicted (Lindl) yield to 1% of predicted yield. And this break even stuff in nonsense. They're putting in 2,000,000 Joules of energy and getting out 20,000. And nothing's changed for over two years. They're stuck at 20,000 Joules. In addition to this, there's no value in these experiments anymore. The scientific community doesn't really care about the "tent" or "mix" or what a diamond ablator might do. Sorry, maybe Rochester Omega does but they're cranks.

Makes a good story though. ICF outsider comes up with a different approach and gets much higher yield, holding out hope for the naive that he or someone else might come up with some Einsteinian brilliant idea that gets another factor of ten. Never mind the approach had been discussed for years and considered a distraction, and that it is a dead end for igniting anything. The PR value is priceless.

Don't forget. The LLNL (and LANL) ICF approach is based on weapons science and underground tests. Weapons do work !

They are biggaJoules,

Do tey? Or was it a ruse?

Omar Hurricane is the best example of "managing up". He always explains things in simple terms that the managers can understand. Provides a lot of good talking points like this "climbing Mt. Everest" on the "path to fusion" nonsense. Lots of happy talk. I'm sure they've tried some high-foot capsules that they thought would ignite by now, and didn't.

I thought the "climbing up the mountain" thing was from Ed Moses. And in fact didn't the real Moses do something like that too !

Even a complete purge from the blog moderator cannot stop a new NIF thread, What is it with you NIF-obsessed fools? Who at this point actually cares about NIF? The latent pains and hatreds and grievances are obviously very deep and very strong. It really just makes you all look one-dimensional and unable to get on with your lives.

NIF really is just like climbing up Mt Everest, you pay some company a 150k to fly you out to Nepal, have them hire a bunch of Sherpas to haul you ass up, watch a few people die along the way, and success is that you can claim to be 4001 person to have achieved ignition...er to have summited Mt Everest. Hell if that analogy does not convince you that NIF is on track and deserves more money I don't know what will.

Omar was at LANL on 4/7/16 tooting his horn. Any feedback on how that went? Turnout?
Anonymous said…
He must be out there for something else as well. Maybe an experiment? I don't think he would go out there just to remind people of his greatness.
Anonymous said…
Title of his talk: "How the high-foot capsule allowed me to observe the Higgs Boson and Gravitational Waves". Also the title of his upcoming Nobel Award lecture.

"High foot" is the description of how he treats his subordinates.

You see, NIF is a religious experience. I might add, as one of those that designed, built and activated NIF, it was a very moving experience. I still cry today when I think about it ! What happened to my hard hat and my notebook ?
Anonymous said…
Religious = non-falsifiable. Yep, describes NIF adherents precisely.
Anonymous said…
NIF captures 50% of all NNSA science and engineering funding. What a waste!

10:02 understands.

Poorly informed discussion. High foot was never a direct path to ignition and everyone involved knew it. It was instead intended to get experiments and theory on the same page, mainly by taking mix off the table. The base camp analogy just means that you do experiments not too far away from the models, get the theory and models to catch up, and then move on. Hurricane was brought on board by Parney to provide some competition to "the gospel according to Lindl". Seems to have worked pretty well. Hurricane was probably at LANL to run a victory lap around Jas MS, whose claims about achievable compression ratios had already been shown wrong.

That explains everything, he was holding a giant gold trophy, thanking all his sponsors, and saying what a great season it has been. Maybe Jas should switch to the Formula 1 circuit.

Yes, Omar was brought in by Parney and Moses to save the day and pose as the NIF hero. The impression left with the popular press was that "scientific break even" was ignition and gain. The getting experiments and simulation to agree as the pathway to success is pure LLNL groupthink. It's a result of stockpile stewardship QMU thinking. Not really relevant outside the square mile lab. Anyway, it hasn't led to high yields, and according to Edwards the codes still predict ignition on some of their non igniting shots. As for LANL, who cares? They're not even in the same league as LLNL scientists.
Anonymous said…
Getting experiments and simulations to agree is like falling off a log. Heck, generations of weapon designers have been tweaking their codes to do just that for more than 50 years. What is difficult in this business is actually doing what you say you are going to do, like achieving ignition, which is what you named your facility for!

Omar has never designed anything bigger than a pimple. We'll side with Jas, who has done the real thing.

They're not even in the same league as LLNL scientists.

How do you see that?

LANL never developed the codes or the talent to run codes like LLNL. LANL can talk all they want about weapons science and weapons tests, but the truth is these devices were originally designed by Seymour Sack, Johnny Foster, and others at LLNL in the late 1950's. The LANL weapons in the stockpile are really copies of LLNL designs. Futtucine and DJ Jazzy Smith can talk all they want but that's the truth.

>LANL never developed the codes or the talent to run codes like LLN

Yes they did

> LANL can talk all they want about weapons science and weapons tests, but the truth is these >devices were originally designed by Seymour Sack, Johnny Foster, and others at LLNL in the late >1950's.

Incorrect

>The LANL weapons in the stockpile are really copies of LLNL designs. Futtucine and DJ Jazzy >Smith can talk all they want but that's the truth.

No it is not.

Wow you are really efed up.

"And in fact didn't the real Moses do something like that too !"

Funny, do you think there are the "ten commandments" of ICF waiting to be discovered ?

Anonymous said…
Ah, yes, the Tablets. Only those can save NIF from the chopping block. Unless of course NNSA continues it's mindless, clueless, fact-less support. "Continuing the same behavior and expecting a different result = ???. Yeah, you guessed it.
Anonymous said…
Of course NNSA must continue to support NIF, no matter what a failure it is. To do otherwise would expose their unbelievable management incompetence for all to see; "Golly gee, they told us it would ignite."

There is no going back now, we ride this train until they shut us down, 5, 10 or 15 years, that is enough to get us to a very rich retirement. What is the alternative? say we are wrong!?,...where would that get us, we cannot get real jobs, we have no skills, no knowledge, no abilities, there is is no where else for us to go. We must stay, stand, bear it and say it will work over and over again until the very end. God can only give us the strength to keep this lie up until the plug is pulled and the life support machine is shut off for good. Life is a gamble but if we stay steady we can still walk away from the table with some spending money, free drinks, and maybe even a happy ending. This is what we all really want when it comes down to it, keep the dream alive, NIF can work, NIF will work, BELIEVE the dream, LIVE the dream...at least for for a few more years.

Hurricane was brought in by Parney !and! Moses? It was done over the active opposition of Moses and also George Miller. Moses was furious, and even went over Parney's head to the Board, complaining that icf was being turned over to the weapons program. Everyone involved at LLNL knows this.
Anonymous said…
Parney I'll believe, but not Moses who had unshakable faith in Lindl and Edwards. Miller had unshakable faith in Moses. Those two are personally responsible for the whole NIC fiasco, especially Miller.

I should have said this better,

"do you believe that the Ten Commandants of ICF are waiting to be discovered ?"

NIF was built on this belief.

Read the latest Physics Today (April 2016) on what the field might look like in 100 years. Fusion is not mentioned. I guess they (the editors) thought that it would be done since it's easy ? Enough thinking about Physics ! Time to kick back and have a beer !

The latest NIF thread about to disappear below the horizon! Huzzah!!

Can we bitch about Moses' sycophants, the second and third tier people who directed his reign of terror and are mostly out of power or gone now?
Anonymous said…
These are some of the sycophants:

Mike Dunne (Dunce)

Bill Goldstein

Tomas Diaz de la Rubia

Anyone in physics/chemistry, especially the EOS fabrication crowd

The LDRD committees which approved anything NIF related including BS strength experiments

Let us not forget Spaeth and Manes. MacGowan with great enthusiasm. Atherton to some extent, but he hung on after the purges. I would not call Goldstein a Moses sycophant, he just floats with the winds.

Plutonium Shots on NIF.

Tri-Valley Cares needs to be on this if they aren't already. We need to make sure that NNSA and LLNL does not make good on promises to pursue such stupid ideas as doing Plutonium experiments on NIF. The stupidity arises from the fact that a huge population is placed at risk in the short and long term. Why do this kind of experiment in a heavily populated area? Only a moron would push that kind of imbecile area. Do it somewhere else in the god forsaken hills of Los Alamos. Why should the communities in the Bay Area be subjected to such increased risk just because the lab's NIF has failed twice and is trying the Hail Mary pass of doing an SNM experiment just to justify their existence? Those Laser EoS techniques and the people analyzing the raw data are all just BAD anyways. You know what comes next after they do the experiment. They'll figure out that they need larger samples. More risk for the local population. Stop this imbecilic pursuit. They wan...

Trump is to gut the labs.

The budget has a 20% decrease to DOE office of science, 20% cut to NIH. NASA also gets a cut. This will  have a huge negative effect on the lab. Crazy, juts crazy. He also wants to cut NEA and PBS, this may not seem like  a big deal but they get very little money and do great things.

LLNL un-diversity

Actual post from Dec. 15 from one of the streams. This is a real topic. As far as promoting women and minorities even if their qualifications are not as good as the white male scientists, I am all for it. We need diversity at the lab and if that is what it takes, so be it.  Quit your whining. Look around the lab, what do you see? White male geezers. How many African Americans do you see at the lab? Virtually none. LLNL is one of the MOST undiverse places you will see. Face it folks, LLNL is an institution of white male privilege and they don't want to give up their privileged positions. California, a state of majority Hispanics has the "crown jewel" LLNL nestled in the middle of it with very FEW Hispanics at all!
